It’s interesting that they mention her father but not her writing career. I wonder what she’d think of how influential she has turned out to be…

I’m thankful for the Queensland Writer’s Centre which loves genre so much that it even runs GenreCon.

When I first joined about 15 years ago I was afraid they would look down on me for wanting to write commercial fiction instead of the Great Australian Novel.

They didn’t. At all. ❤️

I often comfort myself with the thought that while I don’t earn much from my crime novels due to poor marketing, it could always be worse - I could be writing litfic. 😁

You get over having to pick up after them quite quickly. If you’ve cared for children you’ll manage it.

I created short scenes (300 or 500 words, can’t remember) from prompts for an online course, and so far three of them have ended up in a book… 2 as opening scenes that triggered the rest of the story.

I used to do publishing work with a clinical psychologist who was always saying things would be less intense soon.

I told him he was always saying it and he said, “Yeah, but it’s the only way I can cope.”

So you’re using a psychologist-approved coping mechanism. 🙂

We had quite a kerfuffle here a few years back with thousands of people getting to work an hour early and wondering where everyone was. Their phone system hadn’t taken into account that there’s no daylight saving in Queensland.

I write in scenes and divide them into chapters at the end. Every scene should start with a hook and end with a cliffhanger, so… they also work as chapter openings etc. I’ve had 250 word chapters and 3000 words or so as well.
