My magpie pair (marmite I know) are back building their nest in the crook if my no longer dying ash tree. They’re building a 3 storey nest with a cinema and spa in the basement. They started it Christmas week #magpies

Bought this over Christmas. My Dad bought it for me many years ago on a business trip to France, when I was 7 or 8.Never managed to read more than a few words, and the book long lost. Glad I can now fully appreciate an Excellent overview of early Roman Britain 🤣

Its winter solstice in the northern hemisphere. Today St Kilda will see about six and a half hours of daylight, but tomorrow the days start to get longer. Still plenty winter evenings to coorie in next to the fire.

Advent window 17. The St Kilda wren -Troglodytes troglodytes hirtensis - a unique sub species on the St Kilda archipelago . In the spring and summer the males can be heard singing all over the islands, defending their territories and making their presence felt.

We have resigned from the Scottish Government’s farming policy group having lost all confidence in the process.

Farming is key to tackling the nature and climate crisis. Many farmers and crofters want to do more but the current system is failing them.

Full statement 👇
Text which reads: We’ve made the difficult decision to walk away from groups set up to help shape Scottish farming policy. For four years, alongside LINK, we’ve tried to engage constructively and help the government achieve their sustainable farming goals. But we can no longer participate in a process we’ve no confidence in. The process is meant to be co-designing policy, but there’s no clarity about the aims or timeline, key evidence doesn’t seem to influence decisions, and repeated requests to improve things have gone unheeded. Farming has an essential role to play in tackling the nature and climate crisis. Yet of the £650M of public funding spent on agriculture each year, just 5% directly supports nature and climate friendly farming. Many farmers and crofters want to do more but the current system — and the process meant to reform it — is letting them down. We are still keen to help make the much-needed changes and urge the next government to start afresh.

In the 19th century the Great Hall was partitioned. This side was used by the Merchant Adventurers and was called the Court Room - for obvious reasons!

Today’s Advent Calendar Fact: The Court Stand (in its original home on the eye of York) was where Highwayman Dick Turpin was sentenced to death.
We are looking at a the Great Hall - a large room with a magnificent medieval oak framed roof. It is a sunny day and the sun is streaming through the Georgian windows casting light puddles on the pine floors. In the background is a pear green coloured Georgian court stand. We are looking at a black and white photo showing the Great Hall partitioned down the middle. The oak framed roof is still visible as is the Georgian court stand. The walls have paintings on one side and Georgian sash windows on the other.
