My magpie pair (marmite I know) are back building their nest in the crook if my no longer dying ash tree. They’re building a 3 storey nest with a cinema and spa in the basement. They started it Christmas week #magpies

Bought this over Christmas. My Dad bought it for me many years ago on a business trip to France, when I was 7 or 8.Never managed to read more than a few words, and the book long lost. Glad I can now fully appreciate an Excellent overview of early Roman Britain 🤣

Its winter solstice in the northern hemisphere. Today St Kilda will see about six and a half hours of daylight, but tomorrow the days start to get longer. Still plenty winter evenings to coorie in next to the fire.

Advent window 17. The St Kilda wren -Troglodytes troglodytes hirtensis - a unique sub species on the St Kilda archipelago . In the spring and summer the males can be heard singing all over the islands, defending their territories and making their presence felt.

In the 19th century the Great Hall was partitioned. This side was used by the Merchant Adventurers and was called the Court Room - for obvious reasons!

Today’s Advent Calendar Fact: The Court Stand (in its original home on the eye of York) was where Highwayman Dick Turpin was sentenced to death.

In the summer thousands of puffins arrive on St Kilda to raise their young, digging burrows or finding handy hidey-holes for their nests. They are all now out in the Atlantic till the Spring
