A random look back at 30 years of metal detecting in Suffolk.
A mix of common finds, and some special.
Enjoy.

By far the most common reign of my hammered coins, are those of Edward I.

Including pennys, halfpennys and farthings, they account for 17% of my collection.

Found this day, 3rd January 2009

A rather splendid, although slightly scuffed silver Florin (2 shillings) of Queen Victoria.

Introduce yourself as what almost killed you:

Mr Nearly Fall

Almost fell backwards off a ladder when I grabbed spirit level instead of rung 😬

I am Miss Scarlet Fever 😬

Hello lovelies. I am a metal climbing frame from which I fell and hit my head so hard I was left temporarily blind.

One further find from today.
Has taken a while to clean it, and I made it far more complicated to identify than needed.
After ploughing through hundreds of coins from the low country's, it's a bit closer to home

An 18th century Ipswich halfpenny, which has been reduced in size 🤦🏻‍♂️

10% of my hammered coin collection is that of the voided short cross design.
These were issued under the reigns of Henry II, Richard, John and Henry III. 1180-1247.

22 penny's
52 cut halfpennys
26 farthings. (fourthing, quarter of)

Nothing much else from today, but I did find a gorgeous group of pixie houses 🥰

No idea if they're edible
(the houses that is, not the pixies 😂🤣)

1907 penny.
These were still in circulation right up till decimalisation in 1971

Medieval harness ring, hole reinforcer, clothing fastener, nobody really knows, but still an encouraging find. Not an easy dig though. Under a bramble bush

First find, a lovely little medieval buckle 🥰

Rather a surprise as I've dived into a little wood to get out of the wind, I was only expecting shotties.

About 9% of my collection consists of coinage issued by Elizabeth I.

This tray consists of Threepences, Groats, Sixpences and a Half Crown. Still looking for a Shilling.

One very distinctive feature of the Middy (Mid Suffolk Light Railway), is the typeface used on the platform signs, 9in tall cast iron leters.
These were supplied by MacFarlane’s of Glasgow.
Only a couple of original signs remain, this is a replica.

Good morning, and happy new year from the Middy

1st January 2022

Gold on the first day of the year, a first for me 🥰

This gorgeous little padlock charm is inscribed

M.W from Bam
3rd October 1899

Unfortunately I can find no one that this may have belonged to

2022.....
A strange year for finding gold, not only did I find a gold coin on this day, the 31st. But previous to that, a gold padlock charm, at the beginning of the year, the 1st of January 🥰

Well that was 2025.
Just some of the lovely finds I've made over the last year.
Wishing you all the very best for 2026

Well that's the best I could do today. George III halfpenny.
Dated 1806.

One of my first finds for 2025, I wonder what my last will be 😊

17th century halfpenny trade token
Thomas Fovlger of Stradbroke
Issued in 1670
December 31, 2025 at 7:55 AM
All being well I'll be out in the field tomorrow for a few hours, and be a year older 😬

Don't think I'll be matching previous visits, 2022 & 23, but one can never tell.

30th December 2024.

We found an interloper, a 17th century trade token from Much Clafton in Essex.
Issued by Will Anger in 1654.

The tiny village of Great Clacton has now been swallowed up by the now sprawling Clacton on sea.

We took him home for a visit earlier this year.

#Morningwalk today nice and early to beat the tourists while they still sleep. Little chilly at 12C degrees in the height of summer.

Just under 4% of my collection is Scottish or Irish 😊
