Writers are historians. Who and what we choose to write about — and how we choose to write about them — can change the world. #writer #writing #writingcommunity

12/ The decision to stop having a public editor was a bad one, one that I think has done the NYT's broad reputation damage.

I want the NYT to be healthy and strong. I wish we had scores of newspapers/news orgs that were. We don't.

But a public editor would be a good start to rebuilding trust./30

1/ The reason this is particularly bad—and undermines all the great journalism the Times does—is that it a) treats lives like a game b) will be seen as the view/cavalier attitude of the entire NYT, and not just 10 columnists, many of whom should have been put out to pasture long ago.
Of course the NYT sees the "DEI" stuff positively & is neutral on anti-trans discrimination

Just saw a post where someone said that use of em dashes (—) was a giveaway that you're using AI for writing. Uh, no. It could just mean you like to use em dashes.

I think it's notable the whole Project 2025 thing simultaneously treats American pop culture as a final boss (slash "regime") and a thing that can be defeated by ultimately forcing capitulation through law. They have never come up with a solution for changing the culture organically. Or tried!
Eternal victimization mentality.

Who is "the regime"? GOP has trifecta control of the federal government and a big supreme Court majority. Tech and finance are on your side.

There's no pleasing these people because their demand is to dominate and to be revered for it.

It's also not true. White maternal death rates are also not great when compared to other countries. The downside of using the people you systematically opress as your benchmark is you fail to recognize how your own policies are killing you.

Many people are asking me if Elon Musk is stealing tax-payer money or using our private information to enrich himself?

I’m a Member of Congress on the committee for Government Oversight and I can’t tell you that he’s not. That’s a problem.
