"Well, Grant, we've had the devil's own day today, haven't we?"

"Yes. Lick 'em tomorrow though."

- Grant and Sherman after the disaster of the first day of Shiloh, April 1862. They won the next.

Today is one of the bad days in American history. Better days will come.

Just a reminder of some of the context around the TikTok ban: In 2020, Trump tried to ban it via executive order a couple months after K-pop fans used it to organize fake signups to Trump’s Tulsa rally, which led him to publicly overestimate how large the crowd size would be.

I have been pleading for folks to run for their local public library boards, because LIBRARIANS NEED THE SUPPORT OF THEIR BOARDS to stand up to censorship and defunding and “parental rights” fascism. Good on you!! 📚
Dogs, bikes, and community involvement. I'll be running for a library board position, in addition to already being a town meeting member. Even though I have little control over what will happen federally, it will feel empowering to at least have a voice in how my town is run. Plus, libraries rock!
If you’re in the US, what’s your plan for maintaining your sanity through the incoming administration?

My favorite ideas so far: novels and poetry instead of doomscrolling, daily exercise (even 15 minutes is better than nothing), and maybe we don’t need to check the news more than 1x/day

The TikTok ban, the Musk Twitter takeover, the Facebook moderation policy changes, the Republicans’ rapidly intensifying crackdowns on speech... let these be the proof you needed to move anything you care about online to a space you control.

Digital sovereignty is more important than ever.

Good morning #booksky

Just a friendly reminder that Audible, owned by Amazon/Bezos, supports the tech giant. Libro.fm offers an alternative, letting you buy audiobooks while supporting independent bookstores. Choose where your dollars go and align your listening with your values.
Buy audiobooks & support local bookstores
Libro.fm makes it possible for you to buy audiobooks directly through local bookstores.

#1 social media tip:

Believe in kindness.

Interact with people you like, support them, help them get traction. Comment on their art, cheer them on, share a shop post. Be selfless.

Kindness blossoms into more kindness. It will take you far. People who stick together, grow together.

I sometimes browse ultraconservative spaces to understand what types of conversations they're having about a given piece of news.

This will be controversial to say, but weirdly, I see a lot of parallels in the format and logic (but opposites in the content) of their discussions

Listen, when I said earlier that TikTok was back, I hadn’t seen this popup.

Just saw it. Deleting app, because NO. Have not posted on TikTok since 2023 but was using CapCut for YouTube, so had been monitoring the situation.

Worse still, CapCut is still unavailable. 🙃DaVinci, here I come!

We do not need to cede him any more power than he will have tomorrow. He won the popular vote by 1.5%. He did not crack 50% of the overall vote. His win does not mark a sea change in public opinion. He, his policies, and his cronies will be unpopular. Rest up. Take care of yourself. Then...

Remember, every single day for the next four years is going to show you something that makes you angry and despair. To exhaust you into apathy and resignation is the point.

Trust in a phalanx of community caring and action. Each plate focused on /something/, but not everything at once. 🛡️

Bringing this back now that TikTok is pulling this absurd political stunt.

Resist the temptation to jump ship to Instagram (Zuckerberg/Meta) or YouTube (Pichai/Google).

Our nation is at its best with a lot of competition within an industry. Check out any of these alternatives instead 👇
What if we all deleted our Meta accounts

Alternatives:

Instagram 👉 Pixelfed or Flashes
Facebook 👉 Vero or Minds
Messenger 👉 Signal (or LINE, or WeChat if you're on the 小红书 train)
Marketplace 👉 Craigslist

SO done with these meddling billionaires. Sucks to Zuck!

I’m so serious about this. Do not increase your time on meta platforms. In fact, over the next 48 hours, give your attention to somewhere else. Don’t reward Zuckerberg for this. 1/

Citizens with papers to the front if you’re planning to disrupt these actions. Know your rights, check on your comrades, shut the hell up if you’re detained, call a lawyer. Don’t give these authoritarian fuckwits a single thing.

If you can’t stay safe, be prudent.
