TAKE BACK THE NARRATIVE Democrats must create an inspiring and effective counter-narrative against Trump’s—one that reconnects us to our founding principles. The Trump administration is dismantling our Constitutional framework; already Congress has defaulted on its role as a check on presidential power, and the courts cannot be counted on to stand firm on the plain meaning of the Constitution or its own precedents. Republicans have a distorted view of what threatens America: advancement of black and other people of color, equal rights for women, inclusion of LGBTQ individuals, fairness to immigrants, support for labor unions, multiculturalism, free expression, and constructive global engagement. These are expressions of who we are, not threats. The real threats are concentration of power in the hands of a few wealthy kleptocrats, degradation of civil and privacy rights, a hollowed out federal government unable to protect its citizens from attacks, disasters, and pandemics, voter suppression, a chief executive immunized against most criminal accountability, and loss of America’s status as an advocate for democracy around the world. Democrats should call out this attack on our fundamental values for what it is, and promote a narrative that envisions a better, fairer, more freedom-loving future. I believe this approach can win elections and positions the party to enshrine “a new birth of freedom” in law and if possible the Constitution. We lack Congressional power at present but the mood of the people is increasingly on our side as evidenced by recent town halls in R and D districts pushing back on the Trump/Musk administration. Embrace the concerns of the people, amplify them, and be vocal in opposition. Thank you for your support of our democracy. Respectfully,
