Today has been a massive victory for anti-migrant voices.

Not only is Labour doing 90% of what they want, but they're also making it much easier for them to get the remaining 10% later

To be fair this is what students face! (I am not condoning it for refugees in the same way I don’t condone it for students - it makes me so angry they will be in debt till they’re 60!)
Watching the Mahmood announcement and debate. Tory backbencher (Karen Bradley) suggests putting refugees into debt and making them repay during the rest of their lives. Mahmood says she’ll think about it.

What the Home Sec announced today is not the politics of compromise but of being compromised.

Labour has just increased the salience of an issue they will always be outbid on by the right.
@pimlicat.bsky.social: "Multiple studies show that ramping up ever-harsher rhetoric on immigration and asylum never wins over Reform-curious voters. The government would be wiser to make the case for the international institutions and protections we all depend on.”

Farage and Zia Yusuf are going to announce tomorrow that a Reform government will strip millions of EU nationals of benefits, more than double the cost of the NHS surcharge and cut foreign aid spending by more than 70%, The Times reports.

More Trumpian blood and soil nonsense.

Erm….if exempting products from tariffs is “putting America first” and also putting tariffs on everything is “putting America first” isn’t it all just a load of bullshit?

Yes, some asylum seekers are fake. But punishing all refugees because some try it on is like treating all of us as criminals because some are. Just such low politics & it won’t work anyway. Reform want all brown faces gone, whether they came here legally/illegally or their grandparents did years ago

Just wilful performative cruelty that is entirely out of step with the majority of British people.

How many Labour MPs got into politics in order to vote for stealing jewellery off of people seeking refuge from war and persecution?

Nigel Farage is actually quoted as saying that the Home Secretary ‘sounds like a Reform supporter’ with these horrible policies. She probably thinks that’s a good thing - most right minded people think it’s a disgrace.

The BBC is the biggest thump of soft power the UK has and its reach and influence to the benefit of the country is extraordinary. Destroy it, hugely damage the UK. The same people who helped weaken us over Brexit are seeking to do it again.
Interesting to see so many great British patriots right now begging an American president to bankrupt one of Britain’s last remaining truly national institutions.
