A bunch of geriatric millennials made decisions about their futures over the past 24 hours so, inspired by a post from @lauren.rotatingsandwiches.com, I wrote about the fate of the few remaining ballplayers born under Ronald Reagan
They Haven’t Killed off All the Old Guys Yet
You can still find a man who can start Game 7 of the World Series and operate a tape deck.

I've been jamming out to this since it was just the lead and the bass. Respect to the man in the pink hoodie for throwing two key changes into his Woody Guthrie song
They're really having fun with it on tiktok.

The whole Eagles Defense was yelling “Inside Zone this way!” before the snap

Working on a theory that Nick Sirianni is how the Eagles keep themselves from squatting the rest of the league to smithereens to the point where the league feels compelled to intervene. Then you get to the playoffs, unplug his headset and let it rip

phillies fans deep cut: the new sheriff is former phillie jesse biddle’s best friend
NEW: Dems easily flipped the sheriff's office in Pennsylvania's Bucks County, a big swing county in the Philly suburbs.

So? The incumbent GOP sheriff had contracted with ICE. His Dem challenger promised to end the contract.

Now he wants other swing-state Dems to look at his victory as a lesson:
Voters Ousted This Pennsylvania Sheriff After He Signed Up to Collaborate With ICE - Bolts
A populous, swing county replaced its GOP sheriff on Tuesday after months of controversy over his joining ICE’s 287(g) program. The Democratic winner promises he’ll end the contract.

On a personal note, Hendricks was the subject of one of the first big feature articles I ever did, and he was very nice and a great interview. I hope retirement goes as well for him as his baseball career did.
The Best Team in Baseball Has a Third Ace
With Jon Lester and Jake Arrieta, the Cubs came into the season with two no. 1 starters. The sudden emergence of Kyle Hendricks gives them a third, but can the 26-year-old carry his newfound consisten...

Left is the MLB press release that just went out, right is the conclusion of my column last night. I think we've got pretty strong evidence that having these markets open at all is asking for trouble, but it's a step in the right direction.

The latest on the Clase/Ortiz gambling scandal: what we know, what we desperately wish we knew, and how the combination of probabilistic sports fan brain and true crime culture is going to make it torture waiting this story out.
Emmanuel Clase, Luis L. Ortiz Indicted in Prop Betting Scandal | Baseball Prospectus
What does it mean for MLB? We'll have to wait and see, despite our instincts.

I'm just calling it like I see it, and fortunately nobody has barged into my mentions ranting about their own bespoke hangups about gambling or MLB's relationship with same
I chose to go a little light on the actual details of the indictment, mostly because @baumann.bsky.social already did an excellent job on that front last night. I encourage you to read his piece if you want to get into the nitty-gritty.
Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz Face Federal Indictment
MLB can’t countenance the kind of behavior alleged — players rigging bets, and arranging to do so from the ballpark during games — and survive.

This is really good to see: Miki Sherrill just put out a statement sharply criticizing the Senate Dems' pending cave in the government shutdown, ripping it as "malpractice" and a betrayal of the people who are "counting on us to fight for them." Sherrill knows what drove her victory. Wake up, Dems.

This train of thought has led my stupid brain to the extremely funny image of Steve Sweeney dressed like The Great Ahmed Khan from Network
Neat, Booker's up for re-election next year and the gubernatorial primary just elevated a bunch of local Dems with juice to statewide relevance
John Fetterman, Angus King, Maggie Hassan, Dick Durbin, Jon Ossoff, Jeanne Shaheen, Kirsten Gillibrand, Catherine Cortez Masto, Mark Warner, Cory Booker, and of course Chuck Schumer. Maybe others not top of mind. Not all responsible will publicly vote for the cave - that's not how this works.
