The idea that political dissent can only be the product of “paid protesters” or “outside agitators” has a long history. Here is the Mississippi columnist Tom Ethridge in June 1963 concerned that attendees at the upcoming March on Washington might be “whipped into a frenzy by skilled agitators.”

There is a "war on empathy" now? The combined hubris and ignorance, the outright callousness, of some of my fellow Americans is just astounding.

We will make up any "enemy of freedom" we can rather than deal with our own sins, rather than feel our own pain.

Lord, I'm tired...

The Tulsa Race Massacre was not committed by an uncontrolled mob but was the result of “a coordinated, military-style attack” by white citizens, the Justice Department said in a report. It was the first time the U.S. government has given an official account of the 1921 massacre of Black residents.
Tulsa Massacre Was a ‘Coordinated, Military-Style Attack,’ Federal Report Says
The Justice Department’s conclusion follows an investigation of the 1921 atrocity in Oklahoma in which up to 300 Black residents were killed.

Other than the occasional sporting event, we basically only watch commercial TV when my mom is in town (Game Show Network).

Otherwise we stream, so we rarely hear commercials.

Someone from the president elect's camp involved in illicit behavior? *clutches pearls*

This might be funny if it weren't so horrifyingly avoidable. We keep shooting ourselves in our collective foot and then have the nerve to wonder why our foot is wet.

The "accomplishment" that earned Penny this honorific visit with the incoming President and VP was that he killed a homeless man with his bare hands, and then was acquitted of criminally negligent homicide by a jury in the same city where Donald Trump was recently found guilty of 34 felonies.

We’ve never had a presidential election in which the closing week was spent with everyone — including the candidate himself — debating precisely how much he is or isn’t like Adolph Hitler.

“why is the election a coin flip”

every single presidential election since 2000 — basically other than 2008 — has been essentially a coin flip in the polls. if you ignore ‘08, the last time the outcome was essentially known in advance was in *1996*

There's a lot of dialogue about Bluesky being a progressive echo chamber or whatever. But to me, a reporter who's neither racist nor insane, it's currently the best Twitter replacement because Twitter serves me nonstop racist and insane stuff and Threads won't do breaking news. Truly that simple.

6 years before I was born a black boy was lynched for whistling at a white woman, so what the former president is reported to be advocating is neither new nor novel.

After I wrote about Springfield and mentioned being the child of an immigrant, a reader emailed to demand to know if I was "in the country legally" which is pretty rich given that I was born in the United States.
Today my niece, who was born here in the US, asked if we could be deported even though her Haitian American parents were also born here. That’s how things are going with this open season on immigration. If this kid is worried we can imagine how others from all immigrant populations are feeling.

I think that perhaps we should back up on the cat memes. I recall that one of the reasons "All I The Family" was so popular was that significant segment of viewers identified with Archie Bunker.

Come to think of it, Spanky brings us full circle to those days. He's the "Archie Bunker Candidate".

What is instructive about Welles' "War of The Worlds" radio broadcast is that relatively few people were fooled.

The media expanded the alleged impact of the broadcast to draw sponsors. Getting the story straight was secondary.

Remember that for November.
