I don't write a lot of formal letters, but my god, how does Google Docs no longer have a simple template for a business letter?

I've been thinking about this all day. I don't disagree, but I think it also highlights how much we rely on relationships, chains of trust, and (dare I say) credentials as we assess the information we receive from others.
All that the Turing Test proves is that human are much, much stupider than Alan Turing ever suspected.

Dislocated my neck pulling off my crewneck pajama top in 2nd grade.
fell off a car cleaning snow off the roof in elementary school and fractured both my wrists
What's the most ridiculous way you ever hurt yourself? I got out of the tub, skidded in water and tripped over the toilet. Ankle sprain.

😅

Sitting in a restaurant waiting for my takeout order. TV is on.

God damn, motion smoothing is an abomination.

Not sure who thought it was a good idea, or why it is ubiquitously the default setting. Makes even the best filmed shows look like shit.

Feature idea: screen capture tools should offer the user the choice to grab OCR-able text and source URL (if the captured screen includes a browser screen) and stick it in the captured image's metadata so that downstream services could auto-populate alt text and source URL.
It’s no guarantee but the first thing you should do if you see an outrageous story that’s just an image or screenshot or video with no link to a reputable source is to check the replies and see if someone is saying “that’s an AI fake.” And then don’t spread it either way because it’s not sourced.

Wednesday NYT crossword, downs-only, 20:04. Not blazing fast, but good for me on a Wednesday.

Not long after 9/11, I was flying out of Dulles. The security line, unsurpisngly, was extremely long and snaked back on itself several times. As a result, I stood next to Gheorghe Mureșan, who was ahead of me in the line, several times.
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

I haven't watched a lot of football since the Raiders lost the Super Bowl in 2003, but my god, that 49ers/Bears game was a 60 minute demonstration of shockingly poor defense. Pretty sure that even the drives that didn't result in a TD (or the 1 fg) had multiple 1st downs. Like watching Pop Warner.

Watching Christmas on the Alpaca Farm (m.imdb.com/title/tt2815...) and pleased that I can still detect a Newfoundland accent, 30 years after I moved away.

This headline and subhead are unbecoming of the times. Reminds me of Toronto Star headlines about the 1990's Blue Jays: "Bell Tolls in Key to Jays Victory" and the like. Funny for a rag, but weak for the NYT.

Do the Germans have a word for when autocorrect swaps in words you don't want, while also ignoring the obviously misspelled words?

Not sure if this is true (it could be!), but as I've gotten better at the NYT crossword, my favorite days have become Monday and Tuesday, which I do downs-only, and the occasional Thursday (when the gimmick is reasonably wacky). Fridays and Saturdays are occasionally fun when challenging.
my most middle agèd crank opinion is that the NYT crossword has gotten too easy and not enough people are talking about it

@nbcswarriors.bsky.social @bontahill.bsky.social seriously, this is unwatchable when you switch to that overhead view.
@nbcswarriors.bsky.social this overhead view is terrible. It's fine for replays, but please quit showing it for live play.

I took a very vocational approach to my education (Computer Science + Economics) and took very few electives outside my majors. I've regretted that ever since, and have taken a variety of online classes to make up for that: Special Relativity, Egyptian History, Intro to Mathematical Thinking.
The customer model presupposes they have complete preferences across all options already & are fully informed.

But education is premised upon NOT KNOWING a bunch of stuff! Students are served when new horizons are opened for them. Will every attempt work? No. But the world's impoverished without it
This is actually a good example of why the customer model is wrong.

I wouldn't have chosen poetry writing, but UNC made me take a class. And it absolutely made me become a much better writer, with an eye to concision and an ear now trained to the rhythm of words. I'm a better historian as a result.

I've always thought most all sports would be better if the participants had rifles strapped to their backs and periodically had to stop what they're doing and shoot at some targets. Marathon? Yes! Figure skating? You bet! Free style swimming? Sure, why not!
I love the biathlon

"okay, so we got two sports, see"

"with you so far"

"one of them is cross-country skiing"

"sure, yes, sounds like winter, I like it"

"the other one is shooting a gun"

"what now"
