Hmm. The best evidence that dark energy is evolving rather than constant just got a little weaker.

The statistical significance of observational results don’t really have “momentum,” but we’ll have to continue to wait and see about this one.
A little less than a year ago, a large team of cosmologists reported evidence that dark energy (which drives the acceleration of the expansion of the Universe) evolves over time. This made a huge splash but has also been viewed with healthy skepticism. Today they report that evidence has weakened. 🧪
The Dark Energy Survey Supernova Program: A Reanalysis Of Cosmology Results And Evidence For Evolving Dark Energy With An Updated Type Ia Supernova Calibration
We present improved cosmological constraints from a re-analysis of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) 5-year sample of Type Ia supernovae (DES-SN5YR). This re-analysis includes an improved photometric cross...

Let me try to explain why it's important to study the foundations of quantum mechanics. (1/n)

(Have to do some breathing exercises, b/c to me it's blindingly obvious that "understanding the most important theory in physics" is something physicists should care about, but apparently opinions differ.)
Nature (and @lizziegibney.bsky.social) take a more-than-usually systematic look at the greatest failure of modern physics: the fact that we can't even agree on what quantum mechanics says.

And the leader is an approach that is notoriously not well-defined. Ugh.

Before the charm quark was discovered in bound states, it was predicted via indirect effects. An early success story of the electroweak model and QFT!

Mary Gaillard and John Rosner, who both passed last week, contributed to calculating the charm quark mass

Even if you don't care one bit about scientific research, it's important to recognise the value of publicly funding people working on very hard problems and training bright young minds on how to solve them.

Nuclear fusion startups are promising us the power of the stars here on Earth — soon. Sam Altman is so sure fusion is imminent he's willing to gamble our climate on it. But actual scientific experts explain that he's almost certainly wrong. My latest, for @fortune.com. fortune.com/2025/05/07/n...
Nuclear fusion has big backers in Sam Altman and Bill Gates, but it's still decades away
With big investments have come high—and maybe unrealistic—expectations.
