Significant statement from the Ombudsman on payment suspensions - the system is unfairly and unlawfully punishing people who are "below the poverty line" and are "unlikely to find ongoing employment no matter how hard they try to comply with the requirements placed upon them"

A lot of those critics were peak bodies representing domestic and sexual violence services. Also lot of community legal services who work with victims of crime. Pretty stark to claim that they're on the side of rapists and murders.

When the Greens side with the Liberals to block legislation, that's a betrayal. Labor sides with the Libs to get legislation passed, that's just how it works

Thanks @senatorthorpe.bsky.social @andrewwilkiemp.bsky.social @davidpocock.bsky.social @pennyallmanpayne.com for trying to stop this dangerous law.
Shame Labor shame: New powers to cancel Centrelink payments before conviction pass the senate
Welfare recipients have a right to be treated equally under the law, and should not be subject to punishment before having access to legal advice for any reason, ever.

So Labor and the Liberals teamed up to pass legislation to give police the power to recommend cancellation of Centrelink payments of people who have not been found guilty of a crime by a court of law. It’s discriminatory financial punishment of people in poverty who are already over-policed

No, no no. It's because ALP has to do all the shitty stuff LNP would have done otherwise they won't win the next election. And if they don't win the next election they won't be able to get back in and keep doing all the shitty stuff LNP would have done again in order to win the election after that..

Many legal & welfare groups fear this amendment will punish victims of domestic violence, particularly First Nations women

Gallagher says Centrelink has "a history of engagement" w/ these victims & will provide info to prevent them being harmed by these new powers

I'm boring & repetitive but The Emperor Has No Clothes:

'The CPSU has said Australia’s employment services system are “a complete failure”'; they're not. They generate incomes (profits) for private owners. That's a success. It's both the intent and effect of privatisation.

The Law Council of Australia has called on the government to split the unrelated amendment from the income apportionment bill that grants police and ministers power to stop social security payments for people accused of a serious offence.

The government cannot claim ignorance of what this means.

These are the groups @tanyaplibersekmp.bsky.social has dismissed. She refuses to address concerns about separation of powers, due process and unintended consequences.

causing poverty - a primary outcome of criminal law - does not support victims of sexual violence. Expanding police powers has never in the history of patriarchy reduced, halted, nor prevented sexual violence. Increasing inequality in fact strongly correlates with higher rates of violence.

The change enables police to advise the home affairs minister to stop a person’s Centrelink payment if they're suspected of a serious crime.

It affects people on all payments and could deprive people and children who are not accused of any crime of the money they need to live.

You do not try to sneak through an amendment in this way with no announcement and when all opportunities for parliamentary scrutiny have passed if you believe what you're doing is good @tanyaplibersekmp.bsky.social

While he was accused & not convicted, this man continued to receive a parliamentary salary. It’s called due process.

But this week, @tanyaplibersekmp.bsky.social introduced a surprise law to give police powers to get someone’s Centrelink payment cancelled when they are accused of a serious offence.
Former NSW MP Gareth Ward sentenced to almost six years in prison for sexually abusing two men.

Gareth Ward may have lost his career in both politics and law.
What about the two men he sexually abused.
The lawyers for Ward are scum.
