But so many things in life make more sense if I remember that a lot of people live by unregulated, unexamined emotion. Something inconveniences them, they get angry. Reason doesn’t come into it.

And this is a really good point:

I think we all know this but a lot of us desperately want to believe otherwise. We assume that most people are fundamentally decent and that we should be able to find common ground even if we disagree. It's shocking to find so many who genuinely have nothing but hate in their hearts.

We've gotten so many of these pieces where a liberal engages in a good-faith effort to understand Trump voters. Every time, they discover that there's no deeper sympathetic reason they hold their views. They're just misinformed and hateful. My own efforts have found this too.

So they’re like “He can’t be the Antichrist, he’s giving me everything I want.” Yep, he’ll do that. All that talk about resisting Satan, and they can’t recognise a plain old grifter.

The only reasons they don’t see it are:
a) they’ve strayed so far from the roots of their faith they believe worldly power is the goal, and
b) they spent so long saying the left is demonic they can’t conceive that Satan would try to tempt them.

Yeah, Trump encourages Christians to abandon their principles in return for earthly power. Should be a red flag, except the Christians who support him are all about gaining earthly power.
