A fun number theory fact I learned recently from teaching: if n is a pseudoprime to base 2, then so is 2^n-1. It follows that there are infinitely many pseudoprimes!

Yesterday @aubreyclayton.bsky.social delivered a talk for the Ergodicity Economics seminar series. Aubrey shows how it is possible to derive the equations of probability without linking them to frequencies. A video of the talk is here: ergodicityeconomics.com/2025/10/01/6...

Wasn't the fact that this is illegal a central plot point of Clear and Present Danger?
Q: On the Venezuela vessel strike, what legal authority were you guys working under?

JD VANCE: The legal authority is there are people who are bringing -- literal terrorists -- who are bringing deadly drugs into our country

Fortunately for us all, teachers (even ex-military) do not have qualified immunity like police, and so the liability risk to schools from an armed teacher accidentally killing someone would be astronomical, to the point of making this a non-starter.
Trump on school shootings: "We have great teachers that love our children, and if you took a small percentage of those teachers that were in the military and you let them carry, that's something that a lot of people like. I sort of liked it."

"He was second to Nolan Ryan in most strike-outs" is Randy Johnson erasure and will not be tolerated.

I have a hard time remembering which one is Amanda Knox, which one is Casey Anthony, and which one is Laci Peterson. It's just a haze of 2000s crime victims/accused perpetrators

I understand why people compare our current political situation to Idiocracy—Trump is a buffoon, politics is dominated by entertainment, voters are ignorant, etc. But the movie is really quite a toxic eugenicist vision of the consequences of the wrong people breeding. Maybe watch something else?

To play video games with a 4-year-old is to be caught in an endless loop of "Can you help me?"<-> "I can do it!" Getting passed a controller only to have it snatched away immediately, forever.

At least it didn't try to blame the tsunami on the Jews
Grok spread dangerous misinformation during the tsunami last night.

It confidently and persistently argued that there were no tsunami warnings in effect for various areas when such warnings were in effect.

Many were using Grok for updates since the ability to locate reliable data on X is degraded.

For baseball fans of a certain age who grew up watching Cubs games on the WGN superstation in the '80s and '90s, Ryne Sandberg was such an important figure. I remember we all wanted to be #23
With great sadness, we share that Ryne Sandberg has passed away today.
