Friend of Eggbug. Here to make friends.
This was my girlfriend for like a decade. Anything she wasn't interested in she'd tell me to stop because she didn't care. Idk why I thought this was ok...

I remember when that was a new picture story and half of the other computer place was written like this. It was a very good computer place then.

The extremely straightforward prose and dialogue do not encourage people to read beyond the surface either tbh.

Oh, absolutely, contra theophite and others who leveled this, the choice to make this a "stranger danger" story seems intentional. Kaba comes across as a political activist usually, so the idea of equivocation in this seemed impossible to most readers.

The critique that I felt landed better than "Small Place is immoral" was that even the abolitionist horizon is a world of Small Places, a world where as long as there are strangers, they are still dangerous.

Yeah I scare-quoted "misread" because it's not actually unintelligible, just unsatisfying to opponents of prison abolition who are trying to understand how their fear of and anger at harm done can be satisfied.

I think this absolutely can be fixed, but you're still not going to get catharsis. You get catharsis from fiction, not reality.

I think this is why it's so easy to "misread." The narrator is so emotionally different from the reader that she comes off as unreliable. If you heard someone talking like this today you'd assume they were in a cult!

It's important to teach your children about the dangers of the hrududu!

I wonder what she's up to these days... probably masterminding the color revolution that installs President Abigail Spanberger.

Truly the best to ever do it. (Love your Flickr, btw.)

That's just the thing, right now I sort of see nothing as worth losing for! The point of politics right now is to win elections and keep authoritarians out of office, nothing more.

This is intended as content prewarming, that way the page is there immediately when you click it. iirc facebook has done this for years.

Right?? Who needs a "math coprocessor" these days anyway?

People treat these men as bad Boyars even when they clearly don't see the Tsar as good! Fundamentally, the sovereign of a democracy is the People and the sovereign is never wrong.

Not a success in the sense of "in hindsight I'm glad we did this" In hindsight and foresight it was a really bad idea! The outcome is more or less what was promised though: Decades late and billions over budget, a mostly peaceful and moderately democratic Iraqi state now exists.

I think that is a thing that even Kristol would admit at this point, even if he defends the decision to go to war.

More controversially, at this point I think we have to admit that the Iraq war was actually... kind of a success?
