Lab in the University of Cambridge 🇬🇧 studying the cell biology, biophysics and structural biology of virus infection. Blame Stephen 🇦🇺 for the content.
Just published in JBC @asbmbjournals.bsky.social - HSV-1 pUL21 teaches us that the universe of protein phosphatase 1 (PP1) binders may be much larger than previously recognised: www.jbc.org/article/S002...

I love AlphaFold—but please include PAE (Predicted Aligned Error) plots for every “interaction.” Pretty PDBs ≠ proof. If the PAE doesn’t show an interface, it ain’t one. Show the plots. Structural biology's reputation is on the line.

Earlier this year we took our Escape Lab outreach activity on the road, funded by @microbiologysociety.org & @biochemsoc.bsky.social Outreach Grants. We had a blast teaching kids about viruses & the drug discovery process. Check out how Microbiology Society's Adam & Clare got on with Escape Lab!
Like Escape rooms? 🧐 What about Escape LABS! 🥳 Microbiology Society staff, Adam and Clare, travelled to De Montfort University, Leicester, UK, to take on an interactive lab-themed activity. @shivkumarlab.bsky.social Watch the video here: microb.io/4mbADZa

How does #herpes hijack a human phosphatase to promote virus replication? We have a new @biorxivpreprint.bsky.social preprint showing how #HSV and #VZV use a novel motif to compete with canonical cellular #PP1 adaptors.

Alphaherpesvirus pUL21 homologues use non-canonical motifs to compete with cellular adaptors for protein phosphatase 1 binding
Protein phosphatase 1 (PP1) is a key regulator of cellular phosphorylation and its activity is regulated via binding to cellular regulatory proteins via conserved short linear motifs (SLiMs). The herp...

Do viruses control protein translation using riboswitches? Via protein-mediated regulation of -1 programmed ribosomal frameshifting? We think the do. Very happy to have played a (small) part in this epic paper by @jemmabetts.bsky.social, @chillzaa.bsky.social and colleagues. See 👇for bluetorial.

Q for the hive-mind 🧠: What transfection reagents do people like for big constructs these days? (I am thinking #HSV encoding BACs, ~170 kb). We've recently had poor performance with Trans-IT LT1 and Lipofectamine 2000, our two go-tos. Target cells are U2OS. Suggestions or RTs greatly appreciated 🙏
