Savannah figures prominently in this piece: "The Howard Johnson’s Motor Lodge opens in Savannah, Ga., expanding on a chain of restaurants known for their many flavors of ice cream" (1954). It also mentions Days Inn, the first of which opened on Tybee Island in 1970.
The History of the Motel: 100 Years of Neon and Kitsch
In 1925, the first motel opened on a California highway, ushering in a new era of convenience and comfort for a nation falling in love with the open road.

Glad to help out with this & see #Atlanta make the starting XI. A hurculean effort by Kirk & Tom who did a great job tracing the metro area’s #soccerhistory & those of other important “soccertowns” across the U.S. (although Tom gets a yellow for the use of “Hotlanta”). Definitely give it a listen!

In these dark and dour times, I'm reminding myself that the tournament now known and revered as the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup survived the Great Depression, two world wars, the collapse of multiple US professional soccer leagues and a global pandemic or two.
