Really good take on how last week's AWS outage proves how incredibly risky it is to have so much of the internet rely on a handful of tech monopolies.
📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).
It’s also concerning. 1/

PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

We couldn't agree more! Too many of these projects use NDAs to hide their water and energy use from the public until after they're approved. And they barely even create any jobs!
BIG NEWS: We’re calling for a nationwide moratorium on new data centers. These facilities increase energy costs, consume huge amounts of water and expand dirty energy.
To protect communities, we need to halt unregulated approval and construction until we know the risks. More here: fwwat.ch/49ogtrY

Amazon has a pattern of trying to classify workers as "independent contractors" so they can weasel out of giving them decent pay and benefits. Glad to see more AGs calling them out for this!
NJ has no tolerance for companies that generate billions in profits by denying employees rightful wages, benefits, and other protections.
