Excellent pod with @bcmerchant.bsky.social and Cory Doctorow.

TL;DR: Tech workers, organize! It's the only way to disenshittify the internet (and regain a sense of agency).

@karenhao.bsky.social TYSM for posting about our open letter campaign! Many of us are reading your book and see a lot of parallels with OpenAI's empire-building and Amazon's empire-building. We're trying to reach as many of our coworkers as possible!
This is an incredible effort among Amazon employees to pressure their employer:

"We believe that the all-costs-justified, warp-speed approach to AI development will do staggering damage to democracy, to our jobs, and to the earth."

We've all heard the rumors that this was coming. Whether Amazon is truly replacing employees with AI, or just trying to show that that's what companies can do when they use AI...it's one of many reasons we're concerned about Amazon's use of AI, and why we're standing up.

There's been endless talk about an AI bubble, but less about exactly how, why, and how much it's a bubble. So I turned to the framework put forward by scholars Brent Goldfarb and David A. Kirsch, authors of "Bubbles and Crashes," for assessing tech bubbles.

Spoiler: On a scale of 1 to 8, AI is an 8
AI Is the Bubble to Burst Them All
I talked to the scholars who literally wrote the book on tech bubbles—and applied their test.

Amazon is planning to cut as many as 30,000 corporate jobs beginning Tuesday, as the company works to pare expenses and compensate for overhiring during the peak demand of the pandemic, according to three people familiar with the matter.

Exactly this.
In short, the problem here is not that Signal ‘chose’ to run on AWS. The problem is the concentration of power in the infrastructure space that means there isn’t really another choice: the entire stack, practically speaking, is owned by 3-4 players. 11/

On Monday, Trump sent the US back to the 1800's in search of AI dominance: he's gifting $625 million to decrepit coal plants, letting them delay adherence to water pollution rules by years, lowering the royalties from 12.5% to just 7%, & offering up 13 MILLION ACRES of federal land for coal mines.🧵

1/ Amazon is helping build a more militarized surveillance state with fewer protections for ordinary people. Amazon, Meta, MSFT & Google lobbied to ban state regulation on AI for 10 years; Trump included financial disincentives for state regulation in his AI Action Plan.

1/ Amazon is casting aside its climate goals to build AI. We have just a few years to stop disastrous levels of warming. Yet despite committing to net zero carbon emissions by 2040, Amazon’s annual emissions have grown roughly 35% since 2019.

This is so important. Seeing the vast red flags for genAI—and demanding that they be addressed in a precautionary way—doesn't equate to thinking all machine learning is useless. It is & will be very useful!

But it won't save the world, and genAI's current trajectory is catastrophic.
which means that the AI systems that bring the huge environmental costs and power grid burdens are mostly not the AI systems that are delivering real performance benefits. In other words, we can get the benefits without the costs by doing less genAI and more of the reliable AI that uses orders of..
