Time for lazy Lisa Nandy to come out from hiding under her desk and get Robbie Gibb out of the BBC

And drag timid Keir Starmer out of his media bunker while she is at it.

If a self-identifying “left of centre” government with a parliamentary majority of more than a hundred seats won’t defend a vital public service institution you really have to ask why it’s in government at all.
The reaction to the Panorama edit has been nothing short of hysterical. Yes the BBC has some impartiality problems. But its biggest isn't the one you think.

New piece from me.

Concerning the current "crisis" at the BBC.
It is time for Lisa Nandy to do her job @dcmsgovuk.bsky.social and get rid of that Tory placeman Robbie Gibb, and he can take that snide David Grossman with him.
Read the excellent piece by @lewisgoodall.com on the damage being done by this dangerous duo.

Brilliant! It is exactly that. Gibb must go. Hopefully this crisis could actually end up doing the BBC some good and get rid of the virus inside it

Gibb needs to be investigated by as many journalists as possible. I once knew him, unfortunately. As right-wing as you can be, shamelessly devious & deeply unpleasant. “Links with the Conservatives” doesn’t begin to explain how deeply he is intertwined with them

Nowhere in the hysterical pile-on against the BBC in the British press has anyone mentioned that BBC News now has 77 million viewers & listeners in the US and has established itself as the second most trusted news source there.

I don't often call for resignations. But Sir Robbie Gibb's role in the BBC boardroom coup makes his continued role there untenable. He must resign or be removed
‘Gibb’s supporters say he is trying to save the BBC from itself; he was also heard last year to say that if he didn’t get his way, he would “blow the place up”.’
“a group of politically-appointed directors has forced the hand of Samir Shah, the chair, and the departure of the two most senior people in the organisation. Their resignations should be called out for what they are: political interference..”1/

What you’re witnessing is a populist assault on the BBC.

This is not an institutional scandal in any meaningful sense of the word. It is an attack on public service broadcasting.

If you want an explanation for How It Came To This, then stuff like this - the national heritage body having to fight off an infestation of feral wingnut cranks who were deliberately set upon them by the Mail, the Sun, the Times, the Telegraph and the Express - is a helpful microcosm.

The Reform UK DOGE lie.

Derbyshire Council’s Reform cabinet meeting on Thursday 13 November has a little surprise.

Members are being asked to approve measures to employ outside consultants a transformation and efficiency programme. The cost of this? Up to £5 million.
