Interesting watch tonight on channel 4. Interested to see what support Jamie thinks is needed for dyslexic learners.

They use the presumption of mainstream as an excuse to avoid resourcing the correct support and environment. Then when it fails they blame the child.

When do you think this was written by the Scottish Parliament’s Education Committee?

“A strong theme of evidence from parents and teachers…was the gap between the experience envisaged of inclusive education and the experience of the children they supported in practice.”

2017.

Powerful thread from @givetimescot.bsky.social — a must-read.

Across every campaign and every voice — parents, carers, teachers, PSAs — the message is clear: The system isn’t protecting children. It’s protecting itself.
If you’re a campaigner, activist, policymaker, planner, educator, or parent reading this, please ask yourself what kind of Scotland are we building for our children?

Because this isn’t the one we were promised.

A lot of LAs seem to think they can just dodge these or do a meaningless one and if they are not challenged nothing happens.

I am too the system is messed. If we are to assume mainstream for all, then it’s not unreasonable to expect mainstream is set up adequately for those kids, specialist teachers/classes and teaching methods for neurodivergent children. It’s distressing as a parent to be told daily my kids is a problem

Important work—great to see these discussions happening. We’re very much looking forward to hearing the results from the survey!
This week, Assembly members are holding the first in a series of small focus groups to discuss additional support for learning. These will be followed by a survey of members on the same topic - identified as one of their top priorities. A big 'thank you' to Assembly members!

We are deeply horrified and outraged by this appalling treatment of a vulnerable child.

This incident highlights the need for #CalumsLaw.

To the family affected, we stand with you. To those in power, we demand change.
A 7yr old Autistic child shut alone in a room at school.

He was given paper towels and told to clean up after himself after he urinated and defecated in there.

They gave him a plastic carrier bag for the paper.

There's also a video that is too distressing to share.

#CalumsLaw

This has to stop.

Excellent article in todays @sundaypost.com

@jennygilruth.bsky.social response is frustrating - doing a little more of the same won’t solve the issues.

It’s time for a reassessment of how we cater for ASN, with policies prioritising adequate funding, training and resources.

Teachers, parents, carers, academics, campaign groups, charities, DPO’s, the children’s commissioner, audit scotland, journalists and children and young people themselves have all been sounding the alarm on the issue for a while.

Are those in power listening? What is their plan?

Another body highlighting that children and young people with an Additional Support Need (ASN) in Scotland are not getting the support that they need.

Will those in power listen?
The number of pupils with additional support needs has more-than quadrupled since 2010. However, the share with statutory support and the number of ASN teachers have fallen.

This should be factored into choices on school spending and teacher numbers.

This is the big difference that stops problems like this/poverty from rolling down generations.
People with the time, ability or the resources to help.
Some people have none and the cycle rolls on.

How many children like this, with additional support needs, are given up on because the system won’t help them to reach their full potential?

We need to do better.
My wife is trying to help with our 6yr olds maths homework. She thinks too fast. Can’t sit still and struggles to understand some concepts (my daughter not my wife) Just like me when I was her age. Difference is I didn’t get any help. We are not letting this one slip thru the cracks #Neurodivergent

This research is alarming. We support better allergy management in schools. A parent recently told us their child has severe reactions only at school, but the cause is unknown. They’re now stuck on a 3-year waitlist for allergy testing. This must change for both children and teachers.
We've called for more support to improve allergy management in schools.

See what our research found:
