Why have a law and an act if no one acts 🤔

Same problem in Scotland.

You almost can with dyslexia. It’s been scientifically proven that 97% of children can be taught to read to their grade level, regardless of learning disability. There is an amazing school district in the US called Steubenville that has managed this. It’s in one of the poorest areas of the US too.

So many things like the school building themselves, the curriculum, lack of staff, class sizes, lack of adequate training for staff (despite their best intentions), unsuitable teaching methods, parental awareness, lack of resources…the list is endless. We need to address it all.

Agree that there aren’t enough specialist school placements but it’s not the only issue. Many children with an ASN should be able to attend mainstream schools but we haven’t changed much in schools to allow them to do so. We need to look at all the issues, not just one bit of the problem.

They use the presumption of mainstream as an excuse to avoid resourcing the correct support and environment. Then when it fails they blame the child.

It’s a horrific situation. Parents and carers are caught between local authorities and the Scottish government passing the blame back and forth to one another.

Who is responsible? How do we hold them accountable?

An excellent summary. English parents can hold local authorities account but LAs can’t afford to deliver on their legal obligations.

While in Scotland, parents can’t hold local authorities to account and deliver on legal obligations.

Both education systems are a disgrace.

Really powerful article. Thank you for writing it. It will have certainly resonated with many parents and carers across Scotland.

A lot of LAs seem to think they can just dodge these or do a meaningless one and if they are not challenged nothing happens.

Was just wondering the same thing. Cannot imagine the impact of this decision on children and their families, particularly those who have additional support needs.

Interesting.

One big problem that we notice is that education isn’t following the research/evidence based led. As a result, there isn’t much knowledge about neurodiversity in the organisations that influence the education system.

Take the ASL Project board. No neurodevelopment scientists on it.

The irony of this coming out on world book day 2025.

Keep going Rhys!

Slacked jawed.

It’s clear that those inspecting Welsh schools don’t have the knowledge on how a child’s brain learns how to read.

This is the problem with these committees, the people who are often contributing to the problem are brought in to give evidence to politicians.

For the sake of children and young people in Wales and Scotland please keep talking about this.

Parents/carers and teachers need to know what is happening.

Probably should have set up an alternative agency first.

It makes for a good headline figure, but the reality is that they have made it much harder to get on the CAHMS waitlist.

It’s failure dressed up as a success.
