I guess I now have to do a thread on shoes in ancient Mesopotamia in response to this (which happens to be from one of my favourite accounts).

I’m not an archaeologist, nor do I really know anything about shoes, but let’s go on this journey together.
can't believe this ancient mesopotamia shoe wearing ass said people need to dress up at the airport

This is 100% accurate, and it kills me a little bit inside.
Working for a SaaS company and then logging into bsky is a surreal experience because bsky is all "no one wants AI, ever" and in the meantime like 90% of real customer feedback I read at my real job is like "where the heck is your AI? I'll cancel if you don't add it by next week"
There’s a very surreal conversation I keep having on here where people seem unable to hold two ideas at the same time, and I’m not sure why. It’s simply true that the Big AI platforms like ChatGPT are:
1. Extremely bad for society, in many ways.
2. Very genuinely popular with lots of people.

@gregcons.bsky.social has a lovely CppCon talk from… *checks YouTube* …ten years ago (god I feel old) that lays a great foundation for how to teach newcomers C++ by skipping all the warts from C and “legacy C++” (some big air quotes there) because those C-isms and older patterns are just bad C++.
I know it's more complicated than this but it would genuinely be a better first approximation to tell newcomers that C/C++ does not have strings or arrays
"if you pass an array to a function it can no longer tell how big it is, you have to tell the function how big the array is in advance" - they made the language wrong then!

(i am joking but it is funny finding out how much harder this is than c# or python)

I did not have original Guild Wars enhancements on my bingo card for this year, but I am genuinely so excited to see development effort coming into the game! I was planning on doing another full playthrough soon, so this is dropping at the perfect time! 🥳🎉

Oh hey I worked on this! Bonus fun fact: this feature accidentally ended up being really easy to implement due to completely unrelated work normalizing the behavior of VCL function calls. A great example how the right data structures and algorithms can allow your compiler to do more with less.
hellooo i wrote a blog post about some compiler stuff i helped work on. it's stuff you might take for granted in other ... normal languages. i'm extremely proud of the work we did! PLEASE LIKE IT

Really neat blog post. I did not realize how easy it was to set up custom Syntax highlighting with Rouge, and I think the custom styling here is quite readable. Although I do not have the spoons to set up custom syntax highlighting on my blog right now, I am definitely bookmarking this for later!
Doing my own syntax highlighting (finally): alexwlchan.net/2025/syntax-...

I’ve redesigned the syntax highlighting on my blog to use a smaller colour palette, so I wrote a bit about what I’ve changed, how it works, and why I think it’s better.
