This is the playbook, folks.

If you're not paying attention now and doing something about it, then you're going to have to sit down the rest of your life because democracy is being taken away.

Do not be quiet in this moment.

condemnations of political violence are well taken but it does feel as if some
prominent political commentators are of the view that violence isn’t a part of the history of American politics and that is very much not true.

I know there’s a lot happening right now but I want to say this:

I’ve been deeply affected by the way the 80s tabloid media has been almost entirely memory-holed. Not even a lot of today’s media scholars seem to appreciate how much tabloids shaped everything, much less the political scholars
Reality trash tv in the 80s made us the nation we are today.
I don’t know what to make of this but it does make me want to watch some Designing Women

This is the official spokesperson for the White House, stating that the President hopes to deploy the United States military to occupy every city controlled by the political party that opposes him. Explicitly.

President Trump threatened 'WAR' on Chicago in a social media post Saturday as his administration’s large-scale immigration raids loomed over the city.

“This is not a joke,” Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker wrote in response to Trump’s post. “This is not normal.”

Strong reporting here from ProPublica, which found that three Trump Cabinet members -- at Labor, Transportation and EPA -- call multiple homes their primary residence on mortgages.

That's the same move that led Trump to fire Lisa Cook from her job at the Fed. bit.ly/466yMyI

I agree with Bluesky’s decision because the law is insane, but we need to find a way to help these guys out. They do great work.
BREAKING: BlueSky is blocking access to Mississippi.

This is the No. 1 platform for @mississippifreepress.org.

We ditched X for BlueSky early this year.

And now, at 3 pm on a Friday, poof.

I don't know what we'll do next.

Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users.

While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.

🧪👀 Hey #genome wizards of Bluesky!

A colleague is looking for a #chromosome-level genome of #RoundGoby (Neogobius melanostomus) 🐟🐟

If you've got one, know of one, or are secretly assembling one in your basement, please let me know! I’ll owe you a coffee, a citation, and eternal gratitude! ☕📚💙

This op-ed from NIH director Jay Bhattacharya is *infuriating*. He says we have to stop funding mRNA vaccine research because it hasn't "earned public trust." Motherfucker, WHO DID THAT.

It's literally a vital feature of both science and of representative democracy.

I've written a fair bit about trust in expertise as a vital mechanism in the collective epistemology of science.

Congrats to Lisa Murkowski on voting for a bill that she herself admitted was not ready in hopes that the House would change it. Now it’ll become law. She had the power to stop it, and instead chose to become complicit. That’s her legacy.

President Trump and Republicans’ massive tax legislation would force the government to undo billions of dollars in electric vehicle investments made by the U.S. Postal Service.

This would mean auctioning off nearly 7,200 brand-new postal EVs.
