Generative AI is theft.
Wealthy artists simping for gen AI whilst it steals original work, decimates creative jobs and contributes to climate breakdown is the height of luxury beliefs.

I love Nick Cave, but fuck Nick Cave.

No new data centers unless they’re running on 24/7 renewable energy.

Period.
AI runs on dirty power and the public pays the price
Data centers are setting back sustainable energy goals across the country. They also contribute to air and water pollution, Business Insider found.

It is a dark day for freedom of the press. Paramount’s decision to settle with Trump will only embolden him to continue his attack on the media.

Trump is undermining our democracy and moving us towards authoritarianism, and the billionaires are helping him do it.

incredibly, wildly bad
Law360 is requiring all stories pass through an AI "bias indicator" before publication.

The new policy came weeks after an executive from its parent company, LexisNexis, accused the newsroom of liberal bias in its Trump admin coverage. My latest for @niemanlab.org

On pushing back against the AI hype.

I'm halfway through The AI Con by @emilymbender.bsky.social and @alexhanna.bsky.social, and I'm already convinced it's the most crucial book of the year. Every office manager in the world should read this to Weed-It any lingering sense that generative-text snake oil has ANY redeeming value.

So, most social media makes us polarized, mean, and divided…

And, now, we find that ChatGPT and generative AI makes us dumb…

So, this whole “technology is going to make our lives better” thing is working out great, right? 🙄

Yes. I am right. I am seeing how Chat GPT is ruining students critical thinking and writing skills in real time. It is not the future. It is a tool designed to render the populace helpless, to make people doubt their innate intelligence, and to foster overreliance on technology.
@roxanegay.bsky.social maybe you’re right.

It really reminds me of the people who saw that the fossil fuel industry uses personal responsibility narratives in bad faith to distract from regulation, and then somehow conclude that means it's a good thing to unhesitatingly use single-use plastic as much as they can (100 companies etc etc)

This all rings extremely hollow. Most people who critique the unquestioned use of generative software also understand the various systemic issues driving its adoption.

That doesn't somehow justify actively volunteering to help it spread????

Man, what a huge bummer. It is impossible to fully avoid neoliberalism, environmental harm etc in film production. But why actively volunteer to do more of it, for a significantly worse product?

It's like selling 10,000 cheap fast-fashion t-shirts as merch for the film on Temu
The film based on the book "The Invisible Doctrine: The Secret History of Neoliberalism" is out.

It features tremendous narrating by @georgemonbiot.bsky.social but the film-makers made the extraordinarily bad decision to use AI generated images in the film.

Thoughtful reporting by @thomasgermain.bsky.social.

Personally I think the problem of hallucinations/errors in gen AI search will be a larger problem than people expect.

Prediction: there will be a tragic “lemmings off a cliff” moment in the next few years.

Google says adding more AI to its search engine will rejuvenate the internet. Others predict an apocalypse for websites. One thing is clear: this era of online history is closing.
