The Oscar nominees are something. All I have to contribute is that I Saw the TV Glow, National Anthem, and Fancy Dance were some of the most beautiful, moving pieces of art I’ve seen in a long time. I sat in the theater during all of them in tears. Real art baby!!!!

Went to an exhibit on Portraits of a Transgender West at the Oregon Historical Society this month. Transgender and queer people have always been here, if the law allowed or not. Will always be here. Glad to visit the blueprint and legacy 💖
Picture of a welcome plaque reading Portraits of a Transgender West Plaque reading: The history of transgender people in the West is an incomplete one, marked by sensational popular accounts and prejudice. Had these distorted portraits of transgender people not become visible, however, little might be known about them at all. Documentation of queer people's lives was often neglected, intentionally overlooked, or destroyed after their deaths. Without extensive written documentation, it has sometimes been assumed that trans people did not exist in significant numbers prior to the modern era. This is not true. The American West was a place of great change following the Civil War. As railroads were built and telegraph lines constructed to bring news between east and west, cities grew and the region expanded. Many people were drawn by the idea of new frontiers. Some wanted to start new lives. Others hoped to live lives that crossed social boundaries. While many people came West to change their identities, we highlight in this exhibition those who changed their activities, clothing, and behaviors to lead lives that fit more with their sense of self. This exhibit highlights four themes significant to the lives of queer people today: identity, visibility, acceptance, and history. Plaque reading: Joe Gilligan On April 25, 1895, the Denver Evening Post published a news article, "A Queer Case, This," which described in detail the arrest of Joe Gilligan for forgery. When raiding Gilligan's room, the police at first thought that they had made a mistake and were searching a woman's room due to the extensive wardrobe of feminine clothing and personal items. Several letters were discovered - some of them love letters between Gilligan and other men, as well as a letter from Gilligan to his aunt in which he wrote, "...l cannot fill all the requirements of a man as I should like..." This discovery in the course of the investigation led the police to consider Gilligan in similar ways to how playwright and author Oscar Wilde has been treated when convicted of "committing acts of gross indecency with male persons" and sent to prison in England during the 1890s. While queer people had been targeted by discriminatory laws prior to Wilde's trials, the notoriety associated with Wilde impacted the lives of other people in the LGBTQl+ community. Plaque reading: Dr. Alan L. Hart Alan Hart's life was never easy. Though he desired to live his life quietly, he frequently had to leave jobs and homes for fear of discrimination when he was recognized and exposed. His first wife divorced him in 1925 because of the secrecy, constant relocation, and financial insecurity during their marriage. His second marriage, to Edna Ruddick in 1925, was also his longest. They remained together until Hart's death in 1962. Hart lived and worked throughout the West -in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, California, and New Mexico - before moving East after World War Il. He lived in Spokane, Seattle, and Tacoma for an extended time, writing novels set in the Pacific Northwest. One in particular, The Undaunted, featured a gay male character whose fictional life shared many parallels with Hart's. Washington State was special to Hart and his wife - she had his cremated remains spread across Puget Sound and the Olympic Peninsula. Despite a life of challenge, Hart contributed greatly to the medical field. He obtained a master's degree in Radiology in 1928 and was appointed Director of Radiology of Tacoma General Hospital in 1929. He continued to work in public health, notably in tuberculosis research. At the time of his work, the disease carried a social stigma, but Hart treated patients with compassion throughout his career. He helped to contain the spread of the disease in both the Pacific Northwest and Connecticut, and programs based on Hart's studies saved thousands of lives.
