Burials, all containing the remains of men, had been placed in a row situated along a wall. Some of the burials included “curse tablets,” which were used to call for divine vengeance or request wishes from the gods.

The tombstone of a #Roman soldier named Caecilius Avitus, alongside a colourised version. Avitus was an optio in the Legio XX Valeria Victrix, & died at the age of 34 after 15 years in the #RomanArmy. He was originally from Augusta Emerita (Spain), but died in Chester (Britain) 🏺AncientBlueSky
