FYI: law and science, political science, and sociology all still have DDRIG programs run outside of the NSF but funded by NSF. The rest of these programs unfortunately do not.

I run the political science DDRIG.
NEW from me - NSF cancels grant scheme for social science research.

Seems the NSF quietly archived ALL calls for DDRIG grants in the SBE directorate. This is a massive blow for PhD students wanting to do cutting-edge social science research. 🏺🧪

new paper by Sean Westwood:

With current technology, it is impossible to tell whether survey respondents are real or bots. Among other things, makes it easy for bad actors to manipulate outcomes. No good news here for the future of online-based survey research

Important thread regarding NSF's conditions of funding & the choices scientists are being forced to make.
TLDR; The PSF has made the decision to put our community and our shared diversity, equity, and inclusion values ahead of seeking $1.5M in new revenue. Please read and share. pyfound.blogspot.com/2025/10/NSF-...

The administration just cut the IRB at CDC. How does research proceed without an IRB? What happens to ongoing studies? Suppose there is significant complication for a patient, or malfeasance identified, who is that reported to? Who ensures that research is done safely and ethically?

Not ethnography:
1.) Two-week long field visit
2.) In-depth interviews
3.) Intermittently scanning social media
4.) Being professionally employed before grad school and later writing it up as "research" for a dissertation
I'm not an anthropologist but can we stop calling a two-week field visit ethnography

Individual scholars will have to make decisions a/b how they engage w/ programs like Fulbright going into future cycles, if they even continue to exist.

But the message being sent by the admin, & that the Board is calling out directly, is that only politically approved projects will go forward.
The Fulbright Scholarship board resigned due to political interference from the Trump administration. The State Department, led by Marco Rubio, is canceling scholarships for nearly 200 American professors and researchers based on their research topics, which include climate change, gender, and race.

That review is AI-driven and is screening for DEI, trans health, China, vaccine hesitancy, and the institutions to whom Trump has blocked funding, @hannahnatanson.bsky.social reports.
