I would take more delight in how stupid they are if we didn’t have millennia of human history testifying to the fact that stupidity and ruthlessness is a dangerous combination.

A political commentator I find perplexing — in that he mixes sensible takes with unsubstantiated nonsense — is Vlad Vexler. See claims about "woke" in his video on Mamdani (watch?v=7qg_KHXZVSs). Can a @michaelhobbes.bsky.social or an @evanurquhart.bsky.social tell me what to make of him?

@lynne-kelly-42.bsky.social When you talk about the difference between public and restricted versions of a story, I sometimes think of the read-along book/cassettes of Disney movies I had as a child. Like this one for example readalongadventures.com/blog/20000-l...
...Or Two | Read-Along Adventures
I've got a whale of a tale for you, in fact, I have two. So, with the passing recently of Kirk Douglas, I thought it'd be a good time to add 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

@lynne-kelly-42.bsky.social I see Stefan Milo has just published a video "The Ghosts of Paleolithic Australia", subtitle "the stories that survived 30,000 years" www.youtube.com/watch?v=raAK.... I haven't watched it yet, but I feel like you'd want to know it's there.

Guess what?
The story about the trans M&S employee and the bra fitting is a pack of lies and distortions.

You always know someone is an awful person if they think sex ed classes should be separated.

It *always* *always* *always* means they want the classes to be a tool for spreading heteronormative propaganda and don't want students to be encouraged to listen to other people's perspectives.

It’s absolutely GROTESQUE how ‘gender critical’ transphobes have HIJACKED equality language - claiming it’s a “legitimate aim” to DISCRIMINATE against trans people, just because trans people make them feel icky! 😡🤬

Sex Matters is a huge problem for a sane world
Notably in here: "Sex Matters" now taking the position that even the "Men's" and "Women's" sections of a clothing retailer should be regarded as prescriptive "single sex spaces" where anyone they judge to be the "wrong" sex/gender should not be allowed.

That’s it. The rapid establishment of ICE as an all-purpose, super well-funded secret police with zero accountability is *the* main story right now.
Harvard sociologist/polisci Theda Skocpol explains how the vast expansion of ICE in BBB may be Trump's secret weapon to overcome the barriers of federalism and complete his autocratic takeover of the American state. (History from Germany & Hungary in 20s/30s.) talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/criti...

@seanmcarroll.bsky.social Trolls descended on my post in your subreddit, they are toxic. I am quite certain my post is neither inane nor weird, as alleged (at least, not weird to the kind of people you write for). I hope the community deals with them in due course and I get some proper engagement.

The whole core premise of the "Gender Critical" nonsense about toilets is just so obviously rubbish. Ok so there's a trans person using the toilet next to you... so? Get a fucking life

Fascinating new discoveries dating back 20,000 years in Australia.

Gomeroi man Wayne Brennan said: the discoveries proved Dargan Shelter is on a "dreaming track".

"It's a songline track that brought in a lot of different mobs from up north, west, east and south,"

Saw a really bright shooting star / bolide / fireball over Adelaide a few minutes ago. Searched Bluesky for mentions of it, but nothing came up, so I'm doing my part by putting this out there. For just a second or so it was like an exaggerated storybook illustration of a comet.

A core part of my personality is that I constantly wonder if I might be wrong about my various beliefs, I never stop testing them and prodding them for weak spots or unwarranted assumptions.

This can rub people the wrong way, but I like being this way - also don't think I could change if I wanted.

Today is National Biscuit Day, and it’s about time that I populated this account with biscuit (cookie) sets from the past few years. Here are some of my favourites. 🧵

First up, a set inspired by the delicious designs of William Morris and John Henry Dearle.

@stancarey.bsky.social I've been working on a 5500 word compilation of rules for card games and the like, and would be willing to consider a professional edit if you're keen. I've uploaded a draft to app.box.com/s/yf4n0pgapo... and will also seek feedback from other sources. Is this worth pursuing?

Sometime after 2016, I quipped that "“it's only a constitutional crisis” is the new “it's only a flesh wound”".

It's bigger. You've got no arms left.
A plea.

Can we stop declaring this a “constitutional crisis?”

It’s bigger.

It’s a crisis about fundamental American ideals and structures.

“Constitutional crisis” makes it sound like an abstract lawyerly crisis

It’s bigger.
