A central mission of our research is the exploration and description of biodiversity, especially Appalachian millipede species.
Introducing one of the newest species of millipedes, the colorful Apheloria uwharrie, from the Uwharrie Mountains of North Carolina. More about this species and others in its genus is in our revision in Zootaxa — www.mapress.com/zt/article/v...

🥰 Forget about #scientific forums: nothing beats grabbing the attention of a few dozens of 16-year-olds!

📸 Yesterday, me & colleagues at @pensoft.net visited the Izzi Science school in Bulgaria to introduce the next generation to #scholarlypublishing & #scicomm and their role in #society & policy!

pretty japygid dipluran from our recent collecting expedition, this one from near Kaweah in the CA southern Sierran foothills

I love the beadlike antennae, and the splayed posture

one common name is "forcepstails", but these are unrelated to "earwigs"

Did you know there are #millipedes in #Alaska? The Alexander Archipelago and Kodiak Island are the northern and western limits of millipedes in North America.

Opisthodolichopus scandens is an arboreal millipede that’s easy to find in Singapore. I’m confused by their apparent sexual dimorphism—aren’t polydesmidan millipedes all blind? Who are these signals for?

To celebrate, here is one of our favourite species to occur on #collieryspoil - the Celtic Ghost Millipede (Psichrosoma cf breuili).

Known only from South Wales (globally), it was found new to science in 2015 from Newbridge, Caerphilly, by Christian Owen.

Some of the coolest and perhaps most under-appreciated African carnivores are solifuges. The ferocity of these incredible arachnids, a.k.a. camel spiders or sun spiders, easily matches that of the wild dogs and, just like the canines, they can dismember their prey in a matter of seconds.
