This was a lot of fun again this year!

Always good to check and see if that 🌋 question you've always had has already been answered by experts!
We're done answering questions at this point, but an excellent part of doing an "ask-me-anything" on Reddit with the USGS?

You now have a Frequently-asked Questions list with answers given by the experts!

Check it out to learn more about our region's volcanoes 🌋!

Having a blast with our new 3D printer. My battery drawer has so much more space now. This is printed with polylactic acid (PLA), a compostable and easily molded bioplastic.

Not everyone knows that a storm is coming. The weather today is GREAT & it’s fooling people into thinking this is the way the week will be.

TALK to your neighbors. I just talked to three neighbors and they had no idea. Knock on some doors or wave at neighbors in yards and just give them a heads up
Soak up the sun while you can. For Western WA, there's a 30%-50% chance of thunderstorms with hail and wind Wednesday afternoon into the evening. There's a 2%-4% chance that part of Western Washington will receive a tornado tomorrow. For Eastern Washington, there's also a risk of thunderstorms #WAwx

Made pineapple ketchup yesterday. Valley Liquidation in Parkland has pineapples for sale for a buck a piece (on the verge, but perfect for this).

Followed a recipe by YouTuber WeirdExplorer. Pleased with how it turned out! Could easily see myself putting this on a hot dog.

Having fun with the new electric chipper shredder. It's very portable and makes quick work of these pruned apple branches.

It also makes loads of hardwood chips which are usually hard to track down (and quite spendy), so excited to be able to make my own.

Excited to pick green tea leaves soon. Green tea can do quite well in mild parts of western WA. This tea bush is 15 years old and has survived some very hard frosts (low as -12°C/10°F).

Tried making black tea a few years back. Not sure I did it exactly right, but it was good! #tea #washington #pnw

Did you know that the largest Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) in the US outside of California is in Tacoma, WA in Jefferson Park?

According to monumentaltrees, it has an 11.04 m/36.2 ft. girth at DBH (diameter at breast height). #tacoma #pnw #trees #sequoia #washington #sequoia #redwoods

Brief FYI that I'm over on Mastodon and the Fediverse (a group of interconnected, decentralized social newtork platforms) at @adam@tacoma.community.

If you are interested in joining Mastodon, visit mastodon.community. If in Tacoma, see tacoma.community.

If you're like me, you might have been recently concerned about the cost of coffee. Did you know that you can grow yerba-maté in western WA?

This tree, from my backyard in Tacoma, has been thriving for a few years now. Just had our first harvest of leaves this fall. #yerbamate #tacoma

Paid a visit to one of my favorite trees, the Catalina Ironwood (Lyonothamnus floribundus), here in Tacoma, WA. Native to the Channel Islands of CA, this evergreen has distinct fern-shaped leaves. Very drought and heat tolerant. This one is a street tree here in Tacoma.

One of my favorite GIS projects. This was made using LIDAR data of the Mima Mound Natural Area Preserve in Littlerock, WA.

According to my rough analysis, there are approximately 6,756 mounds on the preserve. #gis #southsound #washington #pnw #lidar #geology #geography #mimamounds

What would it look like if you made an elevation map of Tacoma that looked like felt? I followed a tutorial by the great John Nelson to make this one.

Hoping to pick up some more fun local map projects here soon. #mapmaking #tacoma #gis

Are preserved lemons actually lacto-fermented? With the amount of salt and the low pH from lemons, I'm curious if there is Lactobacillus or if it's just the salt and acid having an effect. Can any food safety or microbiology professionals weigh in? #foodsafety #microbiology #fermentation #science

Today's citrus-related project: candied kumquats! Found some for sale at the Central Co-op and decided to give it a try. Their less bitter flavor means these don't have the bitter twang of something like marmalade. Feel like these would go great in a salad or the right type of pasta dish. #citrus

The more we build up our social networks on platforms, the better they become, and the more people join. Feels like we're at one of those inflection points where old social networks are declining due to years of enshittification, and new platforms have the opportunity to establish themselves.

Feels like BluSky is hitting a critical mass allowing for positive network effects to kick in. Positive network effects refer to the draw (and reluctance to leave) platforms because your social network is there. Negative network effects are the exact opposite and lead to platform collapse.

The preserved yuzu and sour oranges project is going well! Aiming to use them next week in a recipe. They smell both different and good which is a positive sign.

Also really loving these nifty Mason jar glass weights from Fermentation Initiative here in Tacoma. #tacoma #citrus #yuzu

I'm working on a fun new project on Neocities, link to come soon! If you're not familiar with Neocities or the web revival movement, it's a project to return to the internet of the past. It's refreshingly nice to lose yourself to a creative project! #webrevival #neocities

BluSky seems to have the most traction for an alternative social media platform right now. If anyone else is trying out another platform, let me know. I'm also on Mastodon and Pixelfed under "apeterson".
