California and other wealthy blue states should implement a 1% wealth tax to replace the money illegally impounded by this administration, refundable if money is restored in a timely fashion 🧪
"Sources said the administration is specifically considering a full termination of federal grant funding for the University of California and California State University systems."

Pure vandalism.

This could never happen in a country with functioning checks and balances.

Just reposting this which I think is the most gorgeous thing I have seen in my career - a critically endangered orange-bellied parrot feeding on a carpet of daisies after an ecological burn. This was the first time they’d had the chance to feed naturally in 15y and was wonderful to witness

A Nature Outlook article shows how researchers are beginning to understand that sleep does more than just give our brains and bodies a respite from the rigours of the day. When we sleep, our genes, metabolism and hormones are regulated through increasing or slowing of their activity. 🧪
Sleep is essential — researchers are trying to work out why
A typical person spends more than 20 years in a state of dreamy semi-consciousness. But surprisingly little is known about why we need this down time.

Neuroscience has inspired AI. NeuroAI suggests there's more of that to come, as animals & people still do better than the best algorithms in many tasks. So being bereft of @markhisted.org's & colleagues' work won't only slow mental health advances, but may also be a critical loss of insights for AI.
Compelling pushback from @jmgrohneuro.bsky.social and the Board of Scientific Counselors at the National Institute on Mental Health (NIMH) regarding termination of tenure-track investigators driven by DOGE.
