Last year I quickly wrote up a 1-page #RPG in the style of the classic Lasers & Feelings to run for 1 of my in-person groups & this year I decided to give it a quick revision to polish it & published it as a 'Pay What You Want' game.

This thread is the perfect example of what I mean. The quote is pulled from an entire conversation about wokeness in D&D. The author ignored the consensus (wokeness is fine) and cherry-picked the one comment he misread as confirming his thesis.

This is a huge part of why so many people think we're in the middle of a widespread "anti-woke backlash": Small movements opposed to social progress are collected into trend stories by conservative media. Far larger movements that want more diversity are ignored or cast as threats.

It's also just incoherent? The author says focusing more on romance than adventure (this is based on a single marketing image btw), D&D will lose its appeal to teens because teens hate sex now. But the entire premise of the piece is that there's more young people playing D&D.

Even by the standards of anti-woke journalism this is lazy dreck. The first piece of "evidence" that older gamers are mad about wokeness is a random Reddit comment — that isn't a complaint about wokeness.

Some older gamers feel “Generation Stranger Things” are gatecrashing a party they have no business attending. These hold-outs – who often self-identify as “grognards” (“grumblers” in French) – accuse D&D of disparaging veteran gamers. “Feels like everything is focus-grouped into an inclusive oblivion. Races and classes in a fantasy, make-believe, role-playing game are gradually being reduced to aesthetics,” wrote one gamer. I wouldn’t call the design trend “woke” because that’s not a good way to describe anything. Now what I would say is that some of it is borderline queerness as a fashion statement. The actual bad thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of it is just so creatively bland. Feels like everything is focus-grouped into an inclusive oblivion. Races and classes in a fantasy, make-believe, role playing game are gradually being reduced to aesthetics. At a certain point people should accept they don’t want to play a game and just want to make campfire stories with friends. The de-monsterification of things like goblins and orcs is also a travesty. Not everything has to be a morally grey soup. Some things can just be inherently evil, and that’s okay.
