Earlier in April Jerry Cole led a pack of IBP biologists heading into the backcountry of Death Valley NP to help the park service inventory bird populations in the area using point counts & ARUs (autonomous recording units.) We're excited to see what we find! (A Least Bell's Vireo perhaps?) 🪶🌎

Lapwing

Back to one of my favourite birds, but this time in a wonderful, wind-blown pose, caught on film by Graham Jaggard, with thanks.🦉

Hammaslahden talvilintulaskennassa mainittavimmat havainnot olivat 61 urpiaista, 2 teertä ja 8 pyrstötiaista. Hömö- ja kuusitiaisia 4, vähemmän kuin syyslaskennassa. Ketkupolkkailukeli!

Pohjois-Karjalan lintutieteellisen yhdistyksen Joensuun taajamalintulaskennan yhden lohkon laskenta tänään hienossa kelissä. Lintuja niukasti, ruokintapaikkoja ja lintulautoja noin puolet viiden vuoden takaisesta määrästä. Laskentalohkoja on kaikkiaan 77. Paras havis isolepinkäinen.

Nugget wasps just make me happy. I've yet to meet an encyrtid (in particular) which did not extract very silly noises from the human. All the wasp parts are there, just in this tiny shiny compact package. Love that purple-y backpack too. 💜🌿🐝

Kestrel!! 🥰
We don’t often see an American kestrel in the neighborhood. Last one ID’d was a couple years ago up in the grove a ways. This male was perched on a street light next to the front yard.

In an Irish Atlantic rainforest, there's such clear disparity between spots that are rained on (covered in mosses, ferns, etc), and others that aren't (bare rock).

Insect populations are crashing so drastically, wild plants are having to evolve towards self-pollination.

We MUST wake up to the calamity we're causing, and act before it's too late.

That means, above all, mass rewilding.

Shocking, even by McDonald's standards. The land under application was restored for wildlife as a condition of building Tongham Services. They now want to build on their mitigation land!

The 'Fairy Glen', Rostrevor, Co. Down.

A beautiful sliver of old oak woodland, but as usual being overwhelmed by invasive species, especially beech.

We SO need to start restoring these last fragments before they're gone forever.

My grandfather gave me this camera 52 years ago, and it sparked my interest in photography. This plastic single speed fixed lens camera no longer works, but I keep it for sentimental reasons. It became the first addition to my modest camera collection.

So here's a little hymenopteran which thinks it's a reindeer. This remarkable wee beastie is in fact a sawfly named Cladius pectinicornis which turned up in our kitchen in early Spring. 💚🍃
