Do you know that the International Energy Agency, in its latest World Energy Outlook, predicts that ***global demand for all three fossil fuels will begin declining within a year or two***?

These and several other mind-blowing revelations in the latest episode of @chrisnelder.bsky.social's pod:

What are the implications of the IEA’s view that world demand for all fossil fuels will peak and begin a slow decline within the next five years?

Where are the MPs, columnists, and business leaders explaining climate change threats are real, gas is the primary cause of high energy bills, net zero brings multiple benefits, and the UK is not an outlier on climate policy? Ed Miliband can’t do it all on his own.

Since Trump’s victory there’s been near daily attacks in the UK media aimed at the government’s energy and net zero policies (there have been three in the last 24 hours). And yet there’s been barely a peep in defence from the government or its outriders.

Useful podcast here on some things that can go very wrong with MVHR.

I like to think of MVHR as a bit like pneumatic tyres on a bike. Installed properly and maintained they are *way* better than solid tyres, but if you don’t maintain them they are even worse (try riding a bike with a flat tyre).

Some gas plants are threatening to shut down as renewable output drops, then bidding back into the balancing mechanism at very high prices to stay on.

This is allowed by the market today, but I'd expect Ofgem to move to stop it soon.

A remarkable transition:

Kenya is Africa's leading country when it comes to renewables.

In 2000 fossil fuels contributed 60% to electricity generation.

Today it is 6%. In 2023 electricity was from almost 50% geothermal, 20% wind+solar and 22% hydro.

In a global energy context, electricity is about 20% of 'final energy consumption', with the rest met primarily by fossil fuels.
In a climate context, a 50% chance of not exceeding 1.5°C has a remaining carbon budget of ~170GtCO2, or 4 years of 'current' emissions. For "well below 2°C" it's 14years.
