Doing a whole bunch of illegal things to expand executive power with a pliant legislature fawning as he breaks the law is what authoritarianism looks like. This is how it starts.

Word of the Day is ‘uhtcearu’ [ucht-kay-aru, with the 'ch' as in the Scottish ‘loch']:

Old English for ‘the sorrow before dawn', when you lie awake in the darkness and worries crowd your mind.

In 1977, Vincent Price starred in a one-man-show where he played openly gay Oscar Wilde; it was condemned by Anita Bryant. When asked about her condemnation, Price replied that Wilde had already written a play about Anita: “A Woman of No Importance”

I just started reading up on the 1918 epidemic due to a short story that I was writing in the December before the COVID outbreak. And I was like WOW, I never heard of this!!
Artists, writers, filmmakers: Please integrate COVID into your cultural work. Avoiding COVID in your content erases critical history. And we all know what horrible things can happen when we as a society fail to learn from history.
After watching researchers try to recover bodies from the 1918 flu in the Arctic, I went back to school to study the social history of epidemics. I couldn't understand why 1918 sparked no major memorials, no novels, no plays. How could societies collectively agree to forget mass death?

Welp.

Our 15-year-old dog died when we were traveling. He was with his favorite person surrounded by loving family, but we were not there. My son keeps waiting to hear the clicky-clacky as he walks along the hardwood floor. I could have sworn that I heard him whining from outside to be let in. #puppy,#dog

Good review of the latest @samantharhill.bsky.social book on Arendt, with evocative sample lines from poems, interesting discussion of how Arendt’s writing in different genres can be seen as interrelated, and praise for and summary of some points in the introduction

Of course: the third thing that brought us together, and shone at the center of our lives and our house, was poetry—both our love for the art and the passion and frustration of trying to write it.

Salk: Well thank God

Me: Of course they will grow up

Salk: Well I hope so

Me: And get old

Salk: I guess?

Me: And eventually vote for lunatics who will try to stop your vaccine

Salk: what now

Me: And leave NATO
