I write about race, equity and the impact of colonization. In particularly on children of the African/Caribbean diaspora adopted into white families.

VANCOUVER: The Pacific Tree Frogs are singing! Come for an informal listening party to the frogs in the water features around Mundell Park at UBC’s Wesbrook Village. We’ll meet at the playground and wander towards the sounds. Think "amphibious John Cage".

"The left went too far" in contemporary U.S. politics is almost always a lie and a very convenient way to rationalize moral failure. For example, "MeToo went too far" replaces "I do not care about sexual violence or its victims and I don't want to have to even feel bad about that"

After digging, @indiginews.bsky.social discovered that young adults from foster care haven't received a single dollar from MCFD's legislated SAJE program for rent support in over a year. "I'm not surviving," one youth told us. "I have so many problems."

My latest.

Just finished If I Must Die, poetry and prose by Refaat Alareer.

A heartbreak of a book, but it ends beautifully, with a story of sharing dates in the midst of flight. Doing good is contagious, he says.

And it is. As @mskellymhayes.bsky.social says. Do good, and know that the good you do matters.

Got my first "Violating an Executive Order" and "I'll make sure you lose federal funding" parent threat today for teaching "DEI" books in our upcoming "Liberty and Justice" themed unit. Even in "Blue" Massachusetts we're dealing with this.

Anyway, don't obey in advance, and don't obey later.

Noelle Allen had the great idea to ask writers to share what work uplifts them in difficult times. I was very glad to get to write a little essay about two works that speak to the troubles, inspire and console along with others’ book suggestions.
