If the Supreme Court killed the Voting Rights Act by early January, Republicans in several Southern states would likely have enough time before the 2026 elections to re-gerrymander their congressional maps and target Black Democrats whose seats are currently protected by the VRA
NEW: Louisiana's top election official asks Supreme Court to rule in state's congressional redistricting case, which could limit Voting Rights Act protections against racial discrimination in redistricting, by early January 2026 to not disrupt election deadlines

Very happy to see this paper out! This has been a fun collaboration between @mcneill-lab.org and the Grassian group at UCSD. We are moving closer towards model representations of this intriguing size dependent microdroplet chemistry. Modeling by @sandhyasethuraman.bsky.social !
Size Dependent Uncatalyzed Sulfite Oxidation in Aqueous Microdroplets

A ton of effort goes into tracking special elections on our Big Board, so we're always grateful when people cite us by name and link us. This data—especially the presidential results, which we calculate by hand—doesn't grow on trees!

Ds now running 15.7 pts ahead of 2024. In 2017-18, it was D+10.6.

More pollution is not the solution. At all.

we could have wall to wall coverage of Trump's health. it could be the most important issue in the country right now, and not without decent reason. there could be wild speculation about his bruising and his public absences. there could be multiple front-page NYT stories.

but who is he, Joe Biden?

So the lab just got our first price quote with the Trump Tariffs included. Turns out that an increase in the cost of a scientific instrument by 39% (the tariff rate for Switzerland as of Aug 7) is…a lot of money! 1/

HUGE FLIP: Democrat Catelin Drey wins deep-red state Senate seat in Iowa, breaking the GOP's supermajority.

Drey won by 11 points in a district Donald Trump carried by 11 points last year. It's another massive overperformance. The Iowa GOP should be very worried for the midterms.

We talk about it in our piece, but Catelin Drey ran on a very clear message: affordability and education. It's a message that works everywhere.

(The Republican, meanwhile, wanted to eliminate Iowa's income tax and replace it with ... nothing.)
