It's no use denying that part of the reason I'm on Bluesky is to publicise myself as a writer. I don't really know how to do it, but I'm guessing the best thing is to let people know what my books are like & how to get them; give an idea of my style and viewpoint; & warn them that I look like this:
However much I try, I can't rid my brain of the extremely wrong assumption that the BBC's former DG Robbie Gibb must have been a Bee Gee.

Why are they playing so much ruddy Wagner? Has he died again?

The previous Voltaire-rich thread was prompted by my suddenly thinking: why, since the vast majority of us have an instinct towards what is good and kind, are we as a society suddenly so eager to embrace cruelty and meanness?

Mabel Normand and Charlie Chaplin brawl in MABEL'S BUSY DAY (1914). Normand directed this frenetic comedy and clearly has a ball mixing it up with the boys.

Voltaire once wrote a piece called "Les Pourquois", a list of questions. Amongst them are:
Why does there exist so much evil, everything having been formed by a god whom all theists agree to call good?
Why, despite always complaining of our ills, are we constantly employed in redoubling them?

There's a guy I follow on here who, quite rightly, is plugging the bejasus out of his new book, & that reminded me I really ought to be plugging the bejasus out of mine. There's 2 of the little beggars, my short satirical novel "Down to Earth" & my self-explanatory "Stupid Stories for Tough Times" 🧵

I hate to spend any of my precious time thinking about that charmless nerk, but having looked at the complete transcript of his speech on 6 January 2021, it's obvious that single mention of demonstrating "peacefully" was just a legal sop amidst a deliberate whipping-up of an obviously volatile crowd

I’ve been reading an interesting academic study of Thomas Dekker’s pamphlets which puzzle over the ambiguities and contradictions of his attitudes, without quite coming to grips with the idea that his primary intention might have been… to be funny

Shockingly, I have only just now noticed that there is a new recording out of Gilbert and Sullivan’s late masterpiece “Utopia Limited“, with @scottishopera.bsky.social. It came out in June, seemingly… Their most satirical work, and possibly their most up to date:

In my opinion R3 should take care not to play Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis too often; it's an astonishing, mystical piece of music, & hearing it should be a particular event in the day. Churning it out like a top ten hit just makes it wallpaper, the opposite of what it is.
