Six physicists simultaneously came up wih the Higgs mechanism. But Higgs alone pointed out that there would be a distinct particle - the Higgs boson - associated with the Higgs field.

The Higgs mechanism is the most amazing piece of magic in physics: not only does it provide a means for the fermions you are made of to acquire mass but it creates three massive carriers of the weak force, leaving one left-over state - the Higgs boson itself.
I remember watching the announcement from the LHC on the news. I have to admit, seeing Peter Higgs in the audience brought a tear to my eye. All too often these sorts of discoveries are after the theorist has died.
