We flower where we flower.
AMIT MAJMUDAR Invasive Species The bees are Africanized. All elm disease is Dutch. The carp is Asian, the python of the Everglades specifically Burmese. The plague bacillus sailed from India to Europe. Europe coughed khaki back at India. Everything is alien, especially star thistle with its spurs and bursts, unearthly, mapping its home galaxy like a foundling with a fleur-de-lys foot tattoo. Though even lilies hitchhike— every ditch lily was once a tiger lily, treasured in the garden of a Mughal. Everybody thinks the Mughals Indian, but Mughal comes from Mongol. Invaders make themselves at home and home remakes them into natives. Everybody comes from someplace else where they were royal refugees. We flower where we flower, flinging roots like ropes from runaway hot air balloons to snag a city's skyline. It never feels like an invasion when you're doing it. It feels like parenting, like cooking what you've always cooked, like dancing with your grandma at a noisy wedding But then you turn to see the horrified park rangers staring at you, calling in the experts-look at this, what do we do, they're everywhere. You wonder who they mean, but then you see. Their poison hemlock? That is you. Their brown tree snake. Their killer bee.

Given the immense scarcity of qualified reviewers, this is harming all real scholars. All journals should update their 'author instructions' to state that if it can be shown that a submission is generated with AI, the author will be blacklisted for future submissions to that journal.

I'm peer reviewing a manuscript for a reputable publisher and came across fake references which must be AI-generated - including to an article attributed to me which sounds fascinating but which I never wrote.

Yesterday I messed around with GPT + my syllabi: running through sample assignments, readings, getting more info on subjects I'm teaching, etc. so I could get a sense of students might see, and...so much of it was totally wrong, made up, etc. Like, we know this is a thing, but it was so absurd.

Without a humanities degree other subjects don't really make much sense. You can gain technical skill but a humanities degree teaches you the complexities of applying that knowledge. I say that as a lawyer & sociologist. You see things differently—you see them better—in fact, you see them full stop.

Once more for the back seats: LLMs like #chatgpt do not "understand" a word of the answers they give you. They are literally trained to recognise patterns in the data they were given, and come up with realistic-sounding patterns of their own.
