A4. Best send off a client did for me was to take me around and introduce me to his colleagues and stand up and give me a testimonial at a Rotary dinner. 🤩

Sending good thoughts to some of our friends who are AFK today -- @angelatague.bsky.social (who left me in charge this week!) And also to @shanecarpenter.bsky.social and @strotebook.bsky.social!

A3. I try to get testimonials. I also write a Client Spotlight for my LinkedIn business page that highlights what I thought were the stellar aspects of our engagement (not always what they valued). If you write THEM a testimonial, you can include those items. 😉

Good point there: at the end, if it's done, you may need to remind the client to revoke your access to anything like shared folders, content management systems, whatever. For mutual protection.

Q2. Closing out projects, leaving shared project mgt apps, documenting where we are on future projects, and making sure I'm not exposed risk-wise for any NDA items. I don't promise to archive and I keep finished projects, not assets.

A3. I try to keep in touch with former clients on LinkedIn and in their circle of influence. I'd like to add a print component since I work with printers and publishers. I published a magazine for 22 years, so a mini mag is what I'm thinking.

q4) Freelancers are also clients of other businesses. Does anyone have a really great example of a fantastic goodbye? How have you incorporated those tactics into your transition plan?

This is basically my freelancing mantra. But I do stand up to any clients who think my friendliness and cooperative nature means they can take advantage of me. #FreelanceFriends
A3) this is a tough one. I just try to do an outstanding job and be as cheerful/pleasant/helpful as I can be. #FreelanceFriends

q3) What's your advice to other freelancers - what else can you do to make this client remember you fondly? How do you balance "enough" - a warm goodbye w/o going overboard? What opportunities do you think folks miss?

A1. In my T&C, I require one month's notice, and the client's pay, whether they need me or not, at the end of the engagement. That helps with all the little last-minute things that they realize they need. #FreelanceFriends

a2) Again this all starts at the beginning. Creating access for the client + me as the designer. Keeping the future separation in mind is so helpful because you can add some training into the sessions so clients know how (some) things work. Especially shared files/folders.

q2) Client work creates stuff - deliverables, shared tech, shared space, intellectual property (IP), etc.

What are your tactics for handover? Do you keep backups? For how long? What about passwords?

A1. Luckily, my clients tend to give me time to prepare for the end of a consulting engagement. There's a period of making sure they have everything they need, while I simultaneously look for a new client. I do need a more systematic offboarding process.

a1: A lot of my work is one-and-done, at least initially, so the end is built into the beginning of the contract. Hopefully, we part on good terms, per agreement, and look for ways to work together in the future. They get the quarterly post cards to keep my name in front of them!

A1) let's see ... probably wing it ... first thing is getting the project list tighter starting a couple months ahead, not accepting new stuff from them, being specific on drafts/reviews/revision times, and wrapping up invoice at least two weeks ahead of end

a1) I'm a wing-it kinda gal. Since my work is usually 1 on 1 with the business owner or comms person, the transition starts when we set things up so there's an easy transition after.

q1) It's time - your contract with your client is about to end. How soon do you start preparing for the transition from current to past client? Do you use a checklist? Do you "wing" it? Does your industry have standards to guide you?

So here we go....

Today we're chatting about client OFFboarding. So much energy devoted to gaining clients and keeping clients, so today let's look at ways to say goodbye to a client positively and professionally. Fewer goodbyes and more "See you soon".
