A4. Most fun send off for a client/project partner: we took a road trip together. SO. MUCH. FUN. We coincidentally stayed in a hotel that was hosting a clown convention. Memories! #FreelanceFriends

A4. Best send off a client did for me was to take me around and introduce me to his colleagues and stand up and give me a testimonial at a Rotary dinner. 🤩

I'm trailing on the Qs!

q4) Freelancers are also clients of other businesses. Does anyone have a really great example of a fantastic goodbye? How have you incorporated those tactics into your transition plan?

A3. I try to get testimonials. I also write a Client Spotlight for my LinkedIn business page that highlights what I thought were the stellar aspects of our engagement (not always what they valued). If you write THEM a testimonial, you can include those items. 😉

A3. I try to keep in touch with former clients on LinkedIn and in their circle of influence. I'd like to add a print component since I work with printers and publishers. I published a magazine for 22 years, so a mini mag is what I'm thinking.

Whew, getting to Q3 now!

q3) What's your advice to other freelancers - what else can you do to make this client remember you fondly? How do you balance "enough" - a warm goodbye w/o going overboard? What opportunities do you think folks miss?

Q2. Closing out projects, leaving shared project mgt apps, documenting where we are on future projects, and making sure I'm not exposed risk-wise for any NDA items. I don't promise to archive and I keep finished projects, not assets.

I completely missed Q2!

q2) Client work creates stuff - deliverables, shared tech, shared space, intellectual property (IP), etc.

What are your tactics for handover? Do you keep backups? For how long? What about passwords?

If anyone wants to workshop terms and conditions fine print, let me know. We can do a Zoom meeting sometime! #FreelanceFriends

I subscribe to a lot of newsletters geared to consultants, and I remember taking a quiz and being proud that most of my clients stay with me until they retire. The quiz marked me down for that, saying I probably don't raise my rates enough. Um, true! #FreelanceFriends @davastewart.bsky.social

A1. In my T&C, I require one month's notice, and the client's pay, whether they need me or not, at the end of the engagement. That helps with all the little last-minute things that they realize they need. #FreelanceFriends

A1. Luckily, my clients tend to give me time to prepare for the end of a consulting engagement. There's a period of making sure they have everything they need, while I simultaneously look for a new client. I do need a more systematic offboarding process.

Question #1 is up!

q1) It's time - your contract with your client is about to end. How soon do you start preparing for the transition from current to past client? Do you use a checklist? Do you "wing" it? Does your industry have standards to guide you?
