I wrote about these footprints in clay in my book. It’s devastating. The baby might have been too young for a footprint to be made.

Amazingly, we can follow the story of the twin toddlers into their later lives, which I find very moving.
Little Ba'la-bia, her twin toddler brothers and baby sister, victims of famine, were sold by their desperate parents to a rich man in ancient Emar. These are the footprints of two of them, pressed into clay and sealed like contracts, when the children were taken away from home c. 2200 years ago.

Around 1800 BCE, a businesswoman named Taram-Kubi received 20 shekels of fine gold, presumably as payment for textiles she wove.

She lived in Assur, capital of the Assyrian empire, and sent her textiles to far-flung Anatolia for her husband to sell them cdli.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/artifacts/28...

Our annual #AshmoleanAdvent Calendar begins today! Check back each day until Christmas for a new seasonal surprise from our collections.

The first festive treat from the collection is this delightful Japanese woodblock print by master printmaker Utagawa Hiroshige.

For me, the most incredible artefacts from the ancient world are the letters people wrote on clay tablets and sent to one another over thousands of years in Mesopotamia, going back to more than 5,000 years ago.

They contain recognisable humanity, warmth and humour. Here's a thread of my favourites.
