The image is not map projected; the larger crater actually sits to the north of the two smaller ones. The shadowing helps define the striking &quot;Mickey Mouse&quot; resemblance, created by the accumulation of craters over Mercury's long geologic history. This image was acquired as part of MDIS's high-incidence-angle base map. The high-incidence-angle base map is a major mapping activity in MESSENGER's extended mission and complements the surface morphology base map of MESSENGER's primary mission that was acquired under generally more moderate incidence angles. High incidence angles, achieved when the Sun is near the horizon, result in long shadows that accentuate the small-scale topography of geologic features. The high-incidence-angle base map is being acquired with an average resolution of 200 meters/pixel. The MESSENGER spacecraft is the first ever to orbit the planet Mercury, and the spacecraft's seven scientific instruments and radio science investigation are unraveling the history and evolution of the Solar System's innermost planet. A supernova remnant with a smooth outer shell in hydrogen emission, and a clumpy inner x-ray shell. The hydrogen emission is shown here in red, while the clumpy x-ray emission is shown in blues, greens, and pinks. I almost didn't finish this, because what I was doing was almost exactly the same as had already been done beautifully, and I try not to redo things. It ended up quite interesting however when I realized there were multiple frames from different years that could be used to show the expansion of the bubble over time. Located just a few dozen kilometres from Madrid, the Cebreros ground station was inaugurated in 2005 as the second deep space antenna in ESA’s Estrack satellite tracking network. With its 35-metre dish, it provides routine support to ESA deep-space missions, like: Mars Express, BepiColombo, Juice and Hera. Observations of our neighbouring galaxy, Andromeda, made using ESA’s Flyeye telescope. Andromeda appears so large in Earth’s sky that in angular size it is six times the diameter of the full Moon and it can be seen with the unaided eye in dark skies. The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope recently imaged the Sombrero galaxy with its NIRCam camera, which shows dust from the galaxy’s outer ring blocking stellar light from stars within the galaxy. In the central region of the galaxy, This galaxy is called NGC 685 and is classified as a barred spiral because its feathery spiral arms sprout from the ends of a bar of stars at the galaxy’s centre.

MARCH 7, 2013: You can't be older than your parents. But there is a nearby star that at first glance looks like it is older than the universe! Hubble Space Telescope astronomers are coming to grips with this paradox by improving the precision of the observations used to estimate the age of this &quot;Methuselah star.&quot; Around the year 2000, estimates for the star's age were about 16 billion years. But the universe is about 13.8 billion years old, based on a meticulous calibration of the expansion of space and analysis of the microwave afterglow from the big bang. Hubble data and improved theoretical calculations were used to recalculate the star's age and lower the estimate to 14.5 billion years, within a measurement uncertainty of plus or minus 800 million years. This places the star within a comfortable range to be younger than the universe. Astronomers have to collect a lot of information to deduce a star's age because it doesn't come with a birth certificate. They have to take into account where the star is in its life history, the detailed chemistry of the star, and its intrinsic brightness. Hubble's contribution was to reduce the uncertainty on the star's true distance. With that improved accuracy, the intrinsic brightness of the star is better known. The ancient star is still spry for its age. It is speeding past us at 800,000 miles per hour. Its orbit can be traced back to the halo of our galaxy, which is a &quot;retirement home&quot; for stars that were born ...
