“What becomes of the University if it succumbs to the demands of a political party or leader that cedes rights of free speech, free expression, and free inquiry? What becomes of our students [of any age] if they are only permitted to think, speak, and be in ways that follow the political winds? “

Well look at this. Here's the head of a major university (Princeton!) taking a firm stand in favor of academic freedom and, you know, rule of law. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...
The Cost of the Government’s Attack on Columbia
American universities have given the country prosperity and security. The Trump administration’s attack on academic freedom endangers all of that.

If you're tracking the administration's claims to "end DEI" a quick thread with the docs.

TL;DR: Admin swings way too wide. Careful readers point out the overreach & the illegality and/or lack of enforceability of their words. Some sue & get temp injunction. Admin rolls back, a bit. 🧵

Educators:

Are you engaging students in a critical reading of any of the recent Executive Orders and/or The Hillsdale 1776 Curriculum?

If so, write to let us know at zep@zinnedproject.org

We'd love to hear your teaching stories (and with your permission) share them. #TeachOutsideTextbook

Thanks @courtneykteachered.bsky.social for sharing this part of my work, as we live through so many days after right now. Solidarity!
What messages am I sending? How am I working towards equitable, humanizing, and inclusive spaces for students to learn and thrive?

The entire business model of American R1 universities is not viable without restoration of federal funding, & every individual institution pretending it can solve this problem alone is also not viable. University presidents need to be speaking out, collectively & loudly about this, in DC, right now.

For anyone working in Higher Ed concerned about the anti-DEI Dear Colleague letter calling on colleges to rid themselves of DEI programs, please read this letter by law professors who KNOW THE LAW--it's a good rejoinder to the letter and over-reach of this admin.

Trump is using a vaguely defined DEI to lead a fascist takeover of higher education. Whether you personally like DEI or not the point is that any program, curriculum and research decisions should fall under the purview of faculty governance and not have to conform to partisan preferences.

The Right is focused on education—banning books & history, & defunding schools.

The Left hasn’t been as focused on education, but should because:
1) Students deserve to learn the truth & with it they can change the world
2) Educators are the most unionized workplace & can be a force for justice
