We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.

The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

The peeragogy community trained a chatbot on the peeragogy handbook. Now the peeragogy community has trained it to turn drafts into prompts and prompts into peeragogical exercises. (peeragogy is collective learning without a teacher):

New from me @gabrielgeiger.bsky.social + Justin-Casimir Braun:

Amsterdam believed that it could build a #predictiveAI for welfare fraud that would ALSO be fair, unbiased, & a positive case study for #ResponsibleAI. It didn't work.

Our deep dive why: www.technologyreview.com/2025/06/11/1...
Inside Amsterdam’s high-stakes experiment to create fair welfare AI
The Dutch city thought it could break a decade-long trend of implementing discriminatory algorithms. Its failure raises the question: can these programs ever be fair?

If you are inclined to think chatbots can only be detrimental to information literacy or are skeptical there can be value in AI for research assistance, I wonder if you will try @mikecaulfield.bsky.social's prompt.

Copy it into Claude from checkplease.neocities.org/contact and give it any claim.

As we rely on AI for decision-making support, how will our independent decision-making skills be affected? Prior work shows people’s decision-making skills often fail to improve or may even erode when they rely on AI for decision-support, even when the AI provides informative explanations.

The last thing I want is for us all to get stuck in an endless generative AI loop where AI does everything. This is not what I mean when I talk about using generative AI for research and writing. This is lowest common denominator stuff

🐘⛰️ Elephants avoid steep climbs!

A new study found that African elephants prefer routes with low movement costs & lush vegetation, confirming that energy landscapes shape their paths more than elevation or water alone

Excellent paper that surveyed 319 knowledge workers and also analyzed 936 instances of their AI integrated workflows. They found that "higher confidence in GenAI is associated with less critical thinking!" Really good research design too: www.microsoft.com/en-us/resear...
