As we wrap up 2025 and prep Spring 2026 syllabi, GenAI policies are on top of everyone's mind. I built a simple question-based heuristic to clarify my own thinking on GenAI for my class. If you’re drafting a GenAI policy, consider this to guide you: mettalrose.substack.com/p/heuristic-...

An important milestone of growing as a researcher involves transitioning from ignoring or rushing through literature reviews while reading research articles, to admiring and savouring them, especially when they are really well done.

The brilliant movie "Humans in the loop" that shows AI development from the perspective of data labellers in India--whose knowledge systems often come into conflict with the annotation protocols they work with--is now on Netflix! Excellent to show in AI literacy classes:

A really important but occluded research skill is finding and categorizing sources into a personal library that you can draw from when you write. Realizing more and more everyday that folder management in Zotero is something really worth investing time and energy into.

"What why how when where" are the main question words in English which shape research inquiries in the west. Do you know of any other kinds of question words, probably from other languages or cultures which open up possibilities for asking different research questions than what English allows?

Folks interested in LLMs built keeping ethics at forefront, @huggingface “Omni Chat" gives access to over 100 open-source models. Some, like Apertus in it, are multilingual, trained on publicly available texts, & designed to minimize environmental impact: huggingface.co/chat/models/...

i’m less concerned about this now. i experienced deep flow vibecoding yesterday. in some ways it was actually deeper than manual coding because (when it worked well) i was able to explore ideas and directions that would normally take me days (due to lack of domain knowledge, boilerplate etc)

the thing i'm worried about is whether AI will decimate the "flow states" of knowledge work. i realize this is very selfish. i enjoy being in a flow state. i don't want to constantly be babysitting an unlearning intern who repeatedly violates instructions. even if they eventually produce good work

What do you guys think of the outlook emoji reaction feature where we can respond to an email with something like a thumbs up or a heart? I kind of like it because it makes a bureaucratic genre more humane, but I also wonder if to some people, this feature seems a little out of place :D

This is the craziest genre-map of musical sub-genres on the internet. Will take a lifetime to explore this. What a treasure! everynoise.com

Each sub-genre you select also leads to a spotify playlist of artists you can explore!

For folks updating their Zotero to Zotero 7, Zotfile is not maintained anymore. If you used that plugin to manage your Zotero files, there is a new plugin called ZotMoov: github.com/wileyyugioh/...
