tweet by steve krouse: There's a new kind of coding I call "hype coding" where you fully give into the hype, and what's coming right around the corner, that you lose sight of whats' possible today. Everything is changing so fast that nobody has time to learn any tool, but we should aim to use as many as possible. Any limitation in the technology can be chalked up to a 'skill issue' or that it'll be solved in the next AI release next week. Thinking is dead. Turn off your brain and let the computer think for you. Scroll on tiktok while the armies of agents code for you. If it isn't right, tell it to try again. Don't read. Feed outputs back in until it works. If you can't get it to work, wait for the next model or tool release. Maybe you didn't use enough MCP servers? Don't forget to add to the hype cycle by aggrandizing all your successes. Don't read this whole tweet, because it's too long. Get an AI to summarize it for you. Then call it "cope". Most importantly, immediately mischaracterize "hype coding" to mean something different than this definition. Oh the irony! The people who don't care about details don't read the details about not reading the details

Had a great time discussing our workflow (Python → R → LLMs → Canva) for analyzing student data to support student success at @uarizona with Monica De Soto Vega, Gaby, and Ryan! Grateful to Susan Miller-Cochran for fostering an environment where non-CS folks like us could grow into data science.

Karpathy says coding with GAI is a new kind coding that he calls "vibes coding." I think we could also call it "accessible coding" because it makes computer coding a little more accessible to folks who don't have the resources to learn it professionally.

It's possible because the LLMs (e.g. Cursor Composer w Sonnet) are getting too good. Also I just talk to Composer with SuperWhisper so I barely even touch the keyboard. I ask for the dumbest things like "decrease the padding on the sidebar by half" because I'm too lazy to find it. I "Accept All" always, I don't read the diffs anymore. When I get error messages I just copy paste them in with no comment, usually that fixes it. The code grows beyond my usual comprehension, I'd have to really read through it for a while. Sometimes the LLMs can't fix a bug so I just work around it or ask for random changes until it goes away. It's not too bad for throwaway weekend projects, but still quite amusing. I'm building a project or webapp, but it's not really coding - I just see stuff, say stuff, run stuff, and copy paste stuff, and it mostly works."

Just saw that Gemini is now integrated into my Google Docs! No matter where we do digital writing, there is soon going to be a GAI tool lurking in the shadows nearby. I think by the end of 2025, it is going be difficult to find any aspect of our digital lives where GAI hasn't already seeped in.

While prompting GAI tools, many don't realize that our prompts get embedded within a "default system prompt" created by the tools' developers. For ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, these are hidden, but for opensource ones like Llama, the system prompt looks like the text in the image (Touvron et al., 2023)
System prompt: "You are a helpful, respectful and honest assistant. Always answer as helpfully as possible, while being safe. Your answers should not include any harmful, unethical, racist, sexist, toxic, dangerous, or illegal content. Please ensure that your responses are socially unbiased and positive in nature. If a question does not make any sense, or is not factually coherent, explain why instead of answering something not correct. If you don’t know the answer to a question, please don’t share false information."
