"Just the other day, I was in the audience at Lincoln Center when Justice Amy Coney Barrett said, while promoting a new book, that she doesn't think the United States is in a constitutional crisis," Farias told us. "Today, the Supreme Court, without offering a single line of reasoning, more or less declared that the Fourth Amendment, which protects everyone from unreasonable searches and seizures, nonetheless allows the Trump Administration to arrest and detain anyone who looks Latino, citizen or not, on account of the language that they speak or the kind of jobs they do. The ruling putatively covers the Los Angeles area, but the effect could be national," he continued. "If that's not a constitutional crisis, then what is?"

this is not true. many, many people are good thinkers without being good writers. people who *are* good writers tend to vastly overestimate what a component of intelligence it is. but I have edited many intelligent and thoughtful people who were at best average-to-mediocre writers ...

learning to write well is not important because it comes in handy on a few key occasions; it's important because it is indispensable training in how to think. AI gets in the way of that training, and all the more so if it comes to the rescue on those few occasions.

Early this morning, four people – including a 20-year-old woman and three teenagers – were arrested by the UK’s National Crime Agency.

They are suspected of being behind the ransomware cyberattacks that struck Marks & Spencer and Co-Op.
